Every Monday, I answer a reader question, and ask everyone else to weigh in too!

Questions don’t have to be cloth diaper related, just email maria at change-diapers.com with “Mailbox Mondays” in the subject, or fill out my contact form for readers, which you will always be able to find on my Contact Page.

Stephanie says:

My little one is still EBF so the poo is easy to clean up, but when she starts solids in a couple months, what am I supposed to do with the wipes? Do they need to be sprayed off along with the diaper before putting them in the wash or is there another way (or maybe a simpler solution)? I know it’s kind of an odd question, but I am just not sure. Thanks!

Stephanie

Great question Stephanie! I’ve always treated my wipes the same way I treat my diapers. I shake off as much as I can, giving it a scrape with a piece of toilet paper if necessary, then wash!

I’m going on 2 years without a diaper sprayer, and though I’ve occasionally done the dunk & swish without getting your hands dirty maneuver on a particularly icky diaper, I’ve never intentionally rinsed a wipe. Unless you count accidentally dropping one in (or the time I accidentally flushed one!)

I’ve never had any trouble with the wipes coming clean, and I really didn’t find too much of a difference in general when my son was still mostly breast fed, with just a bit of solids. It wasn’t until he was a toddler that a lot of yuck actually collected on the wipe, and then I was able to just shake off what I could and I was done!

So how about the rest of you? Do you do anything special with your cloth wipes before tossing them in the wet bag/pail until wash day?

Nope, not at all! I only shake them of if (gross) I’ve wiped a big clump of yuck or something!

I use toilet paper to wipe off the large mess and then a wipe to clean up after. The wipes don’t get very much on them then and are fine to just throw in the pail without rinsing. And the toilet paper just gets flushed with the rest of the mess:)

Usually I do nothing, just throw them in the diaper pail, I haven’t had any problems.

I usually do a “wipe” wipe with the diaper to get a majority of poop off my sons bum, then clean with a wipe. That way I only have to worry about dumping the diaper in the toilet and can just throw wipes in the pail with no poop clumps lol

I spray them off just as I do my diapers – with a hand held shower head and a bucket.
