I’m feeling OK about the Birdseye flats and flour sack towels I bought for the flats challenge, but I was worried about how to make flats work at night.

We currently use Knickernappies Superdo inserts, which are 6 layers of hemp and 2 layers of microfiber. I found the Hemp Babies flats for $7.50 each and picked up two. The price seemed pretty steep considering you can buy hemp prefolds or inserts for that, but if you’re hand washing, you really need that single layer. Plus, you can fold to get the absorbency where you need it, and they will come clean more easily in a washing machine too.

The flats are a single layer of 55% hemp/45% organic cotton, and are made in the U.S.A. I now know I am spoiled by Geffen Baby hemp because I was kind of disappointed that the flats didn’t seem very soft.

The flats are advertised as 27″ square (see above) pre-washing.

As is typical for hemp, the flats were quite a bit smaller after washing & drying a few times, and each flat shrinks a bit differently (usually more in one direction than the other because of the way the fabric is woven.)

They were quite small after washing, and although hemp is stretchy, I’m not sure you could fold these around a very big baby. They were OK pad folded in a cover though.

I first tried both of the flats in my younger son’s night time pocket. Keep in mind he usually soaks a medium Knickernappies Superdo! Both flats together was very fluffy in the pocket, maybe even fluffier than the Superdo, but it was not soaked completely in the morning. The next time I got brave and tried just 1. My younger son had it pretty much full to capacity & unable to hold another drop. I think it would be great for a slightly less heavy wetter, and I think it might be better with a microfiber towel on top.

My older son is rather unpredictable. Sometimes he wakes up nearly dry, but other nights he will soak a large superdo. The night I used the Hemp Babies in his diaper, it wasn’t even completely wet in the morning.

If you are participating in the flats challenge or hand wash for other reasons, need a night time solution, or just something for a heavy wetter, I’d recommend grabbing a few of these! If a single layer diaper isn’t a requirement, your money would probably be better spent on hemp prefolds (just my opinion of course!)
