Baby Wearing Giveaway Review

@ERGObaby Bundle of Joy #Babywearing Review & #Giveaway (CLOSED 10/19)

I very rarely “pitch” companies asking for review products. However, I’ve had quite a few people (readers) ask me about ERGObaby carriers, and I really wanted to try one myself. Since I already had a soft structured carrier, I really couldn’t justify the expense…after trying this carrier, I can tell you that if Ergo asked me to send this one back (No, no! Please don’t! LOL) I would absolutely buy one to replace it. Don’t miss any posts! Subscribe to our new RSS Feed or subscribe via email.

ERGObaby carriers come in original, designer prints, organic fabrics, outdoor style performance carriers, lightweight sport carriers, and “options” carriers that allow you to change the look of your ERGO. With loads of color and print options, you’re sure to find one you love. Carriers vary from $115-$145, and the heart-2-heart insert or organic insert allow you to snugly papoose your 7-12 lb infant in any ERGObaby carrier. Inserts sell separately for $25-$38, but ERGObaby has bundled them together in 4 great Bundle of Joy packages. Each package includes an original or organic carrier, with a matching, or complimentary color insert. The bundles retail for $130-$163 and will allow you to carry your baby essentially from birth to 45 lbs.

When I saw the size of the instruction manual I got a little nervous! Fortunately, only a little bit of it was English. There was also a separate guide for the newborn insert, plus some common sense babywearing safety tips.

The insert & pillow together provide head & neck support as well proper positioning for newborns. The insert can be used without the support pillow for babies who are over 12 lbs but need the extra head & neck support. The pillow can be used without the shell to better position small babies with good head & neck control.

It has a simple snap closure and adjustment to tighten or loosen it.

@ERGOBaby #babywearing Bundle via @chgdiapers 13 hood tucks in pocket @ERGOBaby #babywearing Bundle via @chgdiapers 14 huge storage pocket

The carrier has a pocket to tuck the hood into when you’re not using it, plus a gigantic, zipper closure pocket for your stuff (keys, cell phone etc.) The pocket really is big. I want to try stuffing a cloth diaper and wipe in it, but I am pretty sure it will fit!

@ERGOBaby #babywearing Bundle via @chgdiapers 17 also adjustment on fromt of hood @ERGOBaby #babywearing Bundle via @chgdiapers 18 extra material allows you to make hood larger

The hood has several snaps to affix it to the shoulder straps to support baby’s head while napping, or to use as a nursing cover. The hood’s material is silky soft, and there is an additional adjustment to lengthen the hood if needed. The hood has a seam down the middle which makes it a bit “gusseted” (not sure what word I’m searching for!) to fit baby’s head, rather than bring a flat piece of fabric pulled over the back of your baby’s head.

@ERGOBaby #babywearing Bundle via @chgdiapers 19 back buckle @ERGOBaby #babywearing Bundle via @chgdiapers 20 straqp slides up and down

The back buckle slides up and down to get a comfortable fit that you can also reach to unbuckle. There is one strap to tug to tighten, and it has an elastic strap to bundle up the excess webbing.

@ERGOBaby #babywearing Bundle via @chgdiapers 23 extra webbing rolls up neatly

The shoulder straps unbuckle to do a hip carry (they thread through a piece of elastic as a safety “backup”), and have a very easy, single strap to tug and adjust. Like the back strap, the excess bundles up in an elastic strap.

@ERGOBaby #babywearing Bundle via @chgdiapers 24 waist buckle elastic safety @ERGOBaby #babywearing Bundle via @chgdiapers 25 can bypass

The waist buckle has the same safety feature of the additional elastic strap. The buckle actually sits on a piece of the waist belt padding vs. directly in the middle of the back. I found this very comfortable since the buckle didn’t dig in at all, particularly when sitting.

I carried my 31ish pound 3 year (and 4 month!) old in the ERGObaby, and it was totally comfortable.

I loved this with my 16ish pound 9 1/2 month old of course. The first time I wore it was when we took a “road trip” down to Whole Foods. I think I drove my husband nuts through the produce section, oohing and aahing about how comfortable it was, how it was so easy to adjust, it wasn’t falling off my shoulders or riding up at my waist, wasn’t digging in anywhere, how much I loved it. How much I wish I had bought one 3 years ago. And did I mention how much I love it? I think each person’s size, shape and baby size affects what carrier they like best, but the ERGObaby fit my small frame incredibly well. ERGObaby estimates that their carriers will fit people from around 5′ tall to 6′ 4″ tall. I am not quite 5 feet tall and rather petite/small framed, and I love it. They also sell a waist extension to expand the circumference by 8″.

The carrier’s seat is very wide (but still comfy for my tiny guy) and the leg openings (as well as the adult arm openings) are nicely padded. The whole carrier in fact is nicely padded, both the lining and the shoulder straps. I got great coverage to nurse in the carrier too! (above right)

Additional features are the waist band business card size pocket, and a strap to attach accessories like backpacks and waist pouches.

Since I don’t have a wee little one anymore (Boo-hoo! Sniffle sniffle!), I borrowed my friend and her beautiful baby girl to demonstrate the infant insert. Her baby is about 12 weeks old and 11 1/2 pounds. My friend has an ERGObaby carrier as well, and considered buying the newborn insert. She decided against it since her daughter was born in July and she thought it might be too hot. After trying this one, she said she wished they had bought one, and she definitely will if they have another baby!

Her daughter was super snuggly and cozy in the insert.

Despite the look on her face in the last picture (I think she just found out she wasn’t being compensated for her modeling!) she was very content!

Although not pictured, you can also do a back and hip carry in the ERGO!

    To clarify, did you say there is padding around the leg holes?

    • September 28, 2012 at 3:12 pm
      Reply

      It isn’t THICK padding but it is enough add’l that it won’t dig into their little legs. If you look closely at the “action shots” you can see it.
