Flat Diapers Flats Flats Challenge

What’s Working for Me During the 4th Annual Flats Challenge

I’m participating in Dirty Diaper Laundry’s 4th annual Flats & Handwashing challenge. One week, no washer, no dryer, no problem. Since this isn’t my first year doing the challenge, I feel much more prepared.

Washing in the utility sink is working well, and I learned the hard way the first year, that rubber gloves are a necessity. Not because of the “ick” factor but because I got blisters from wringing without them! The Tide is working OK though I initially had a hard time making sure I use enough, but not so much that I have to rinse forever. The first day I thought I’d die rinsing the things. Someone would come in and find my skeleton hunched over a sink full of sudsy flats. Once I figured out the right amount, it wasn’t so bad.

Rinsing/scrubbing/soaking poopy diapers in the toilet is an absolute must at this point. The very first one was mostly ploppable but the rest…yeah, not so much. The fleece liners made it much easier to rinse, and the texture of the rubber gloves helped me scrub.

Wringing is important or the flats take forever to dry inside. Line drying is much quicker! Also, while I appreciate the extra absorbency that the extra-large flour sack towels provide, I find them a bit bulky still. Though folding flats can be fun (origami is my favorite), I’m exclusively using the pad fold this year.

I’m getting through but looking forward to using my washing machine next week.

I totally want to try this next year! How much tide did you use for how much water/diapers + flats?

I eyeballed everything but it was less than 1/2 tablespoon of Tide to 6-8 flats (plus fleece liners, 2 covers, wipes etc) in enough water to cover them in the sink. Hmm…Definitely fewer than five gallons but I’m not entirely sure how much. Not too helpful, huh? :-p
