I published a post in January comparing the old style newborn cloth diapers to the new style. My issue with using the old style on my newborn was that they weren’t absorbent enough for my heavy wetter. I also wondered about the size difference and how the new style would fit.
Since I didn’t have a newborn, Katie of a Tale of Fluff graciously agreed to try both on her new baby and report back.
Here’s Katie’s son at about 10 days old and 9-10 pounds in the old style:
Katie says: “After using both the old style GroVia newborn diaper and the new style I noticed a pretty big difference in absorbency. The old style was definitely less absorbent for my little guy. After about a week or so, he was already wetting through the diaper in just one pee. So we were only able to use the old style for that first week or two because we just ended up frustrated (and wet) because he peed right through the diaper.”
Here’s Katie’s little guy at 4 weeks old and around 11 pounds in the new style:
Katie says: “The new style is much, much better with absorbency. They don’t leak after just one pee and the fit is much better as well.”
“He’s still wearing the new style at a month old and doesn’t soak them through like he did the old style.”
Sounds to me like if the old style didn’t work for you, the new style might do the trick!

I didn’t realize they released another new style (so much to keep up with these days, so little time!) but the one I reviewed when Emily was born a little less than 2 years ago was DEFINITELY not absorbent enough, so this is great news! Plus, as adorable as those ruffled leg elastics were, I swear they led to more wicking!
