Cloth Diaper Advice – Mailbox Mondays 6/13/11 – Night Time Diapers for a Super Soaker

#clothdiapers for night time heavy wetters via @chgdiapers

Have a cloth diaper problem? On Mondays, I answer reader questions, and ask my other readers to give their advice too.

Questions don’t have to be cloth diaper related, just email maria at change-diapers.com with “Mailbox Mondays” in the subject, or fill out my contact form for readers, which you will always be able to find on my Contact Page.

Suki says:

Hi Maria, I had left a comment on your wall about my daughter potentially having diabetes. Well, it turned out that she doesn’t. She just hit that toddler stage where she pees a ton more. What I’ve done to keep up is to double stuff everything. That works during the day and diaper changes are about every two hours.

What I’m having trouble with is nighttime diapering. She is almost 18 months and drinks 16 – 32 ounce of milk each night and so I have to change her diaper once or twice at night or I get leaks. She’s a super duper heavy wetter at night.

I’ve tried a Super Do with a Loopy Do and that lasts maybe half the night. I’ve tried a combination of hemp and microfiber inserts (as many as I can without the leg opening gaping!). I don’t want them to be too bulky so I thought maybe some hemp flats?

I’m willing to spend some money but I want to increase my chances of something that would work.

Thanks!

I’m so glad to hear she doesn’t have diabetes! That much fluid intake will definitely soak a night time diaper! Since the Superdo (and a Loopydo, wow!) didn’t cut it, my next suggestion would be fitteds with wool. Fitteds are great because the whole diaper is absorbent.

When I was searching for really absorbent fitteds, I found the Guerilla Fluff Utilitarian. I had mine made with all the extras, like added Zorb in the soakers, and a wool precision doubler (I don’t believe she uses wool anymore though.) If you can do it without a leg gap, try adding a natural fiber (like a hemp blend) insert, doubler or prefold inside as well. Top it with an extra-thick, well lanolized wool cover. In the winter, I also used fleece PJ pants for an additional barrier!

If that doesn’t do it, you may need to continue to change her at night, until she is old enough to limit her fluids a bit before bed!

So how about the rest of you? Have you dealt with an epic super-soaker? What worked for you at night?

Thirsties Duo Fab Fitted Review & Comparison To Fab Fitted Diaper

thirsties newborn fitted vs duo sz 1 ftted

I have done a Thirsties Duo Diaper Review and a Thirsties Duo Wrap Review, so I was curious about the new Duo Fab Fitteds.  I was super lucky and I won a duo fitted and cover in a Dirties on Diapering backer giveaway!  I wanted to do a comparison to the discontinued sized fab fitted, but I didn’t have one, and I was having trouble finding one.

I emailed Thirsties hoping they had one stashed in a warehouse they could sell me, but no such luck.  Their customer service is so awesome that without my asking, they posted on their Facebook page asking if any of their retailers had them in stock.  I found what I was looking for at Fern Leaf Boutique thanks to their help.  I ordered on Monday, February 28th and even though FLB is in California (I’m in Maryland), the diaper was in my mailbox on Wednesday March 2nd!  Whoa!!

newborn fab fitted

I bought the fab fitted in the extra-small/newborn size.  Fitteds and covers aren’t my first choice, but they are fantastic for holding in the explosive newborn messes.  I don’t have a newborn but hey…don’t judge me.  I love cloth diapers!

The discontinued fab fitteds are sized.  X-Small fits 6-12 lbs, Small fits 12-18 lbs, Medium fits 18-28 lbs and Large fits 28-40 lbs.

They have a super soft outer, hook & loop closures and laundry tabs.

The fab fitteds have a sewn in microfiber soaker and stay dry inner.

Here is the X-Small measured folded and stretched:

Since I don’t have a newborn, I am using my usual “model.”  I’ve also pictured him in newborn and size 1 disposables, so you can compare.

The retail price of the Fab Fitted was $14.50, though I got mine for $10.95 and free shipping (yippee!!) since it was discontinued.

thirsties sz 1 duo fab fitted

The Duo Fab Fitteds have a lot of the same great features, with a few improvements.  The MSRP is a bit higher at $17.00, but they are still a great deal when you consider that you are replacing 4 sized diapers with a size 1 and size 2 duo diaper.

The duo fitted comes in easy hook & loop closures with laundry tabs, or snaps.

It still has the same soft, stay dry inner lining.

The microfiber soaker is sewn in a tunnel design for more thorough washing, quicker drying time and the ability to stuff it further if needed.

Of course, the duo fab fitted has rise snaps to adjust the size of the diaper.  Like the other duo products, the size 1 is estimated to fit 6-18 lbs and the 2 fits 18-40 lbs.

If you wonder about sizing, my Duo Wrap Review has a photo of my son at 21 lbs in the size 2 on the smallest setting, and the size 1 on the largest setting taken the same day.

So, same great features, but now with the duo rise snaps (which don’t seem to add the bulk, probably largely because the soaker doesn’t fold/bunch on smaller settings.)  It’s available with a snap closure, and has an improved soaker style, and $2.50 higher price tag. See this on my newborn.

Cloth Diapers Fitted Diapers Inserts Natural Fiber One Size Diapers Review Side Snapping Snap Closure

Babykicks Organic Fitted Diaper Review

babykicks organic fitted cloth diaper

The Babykicks Organic Fitted Diaper looks very similar to the Babykicks pocket diaper.  Of course, since it’s a fitted diaper, there is no waterproof PUL layer, and it needs to be used with a cover.

babykicks fitted diaper sidebabykicks fitted cloth diaper rear

The diaper fits 7-40 pounds according to Babykicks, and is one-size via 4 snap down rise settings.

one size via rise snaps
This is a side snapping diaper, so it can easily be used as a training pant as well. The fitted doesn’t have the 4th/smallest white closure snap that the pocket diaper has.

3 settings on side snapping wingsdoesn't have the smallest wing snap like the 3g pocket

This is a pocket fitted, so the whole diaper is absorbent and the insert can be removed for more thorough cleaning.  Plus you can customize the absorbency by adding more inserts. The diaper itself is 55% certified organic cotton, 33% natural hemp and 17% polyester (for stretch.)

pocket for insert
The diaper comes with the same one-size Joey Bunz insert that the 3G pocket diaper comes with. It’s tapered at one end, so it fits nicely in the pocket, and it has lines to help you fold the insert in the right place for smaller settings. The hemp/cotton blend insert is super absorbent in my experience.

Here is the diaper measured folded and stretched on each size setting.  Definitely not an exact science, especially since this diaper is extra stretchy.  The photos/measurements were taken after prepping (washing/drying 3-5 times.)

I am personally more of a pocket diaper Mama than a fitted and cover Mama, but this is a great diaper.  It has the same awesome Joey Bunz absorbency of the pocket diapers, but the whole diaper is absorbent.  A fitted and cover also make for a great defense against explosive diapers!  One diaper retails for $19.95. See this on my newborn.

A Year of Fluff Cloth Diapers Fitted Diapers Giveaway Made in the USA Newborn Diapers Review Snap Closure

Kissaluvs “Kissa’s” Cotton Fleece Fitted Review & Giveaway (CLOSED 10/23)

>

kissaluvs 0 fitted

I reviewed a Kissaluvs Marvels AIO in May; that’s still a favorite of mine, and my Kissa’s Wool Lover Diaper Cover was my first ever wool (purchased in March.)  So, when I won a Kissa’s Cotton Fleece Fitted from the Abby’s Lane blog chat, I was a little excited, to say the least!!

kissa's fitted

Lucky for you, I contacted Kissaluvs, and they will be giving two of my blog readers a fitted diaper as well!

kissa's size 0 back

In true cloth diaper addict fashion, I chose the size 0 (fits approximately 5-15 lbs) even though I don’t have a newborn, nor am I pregnant!  Hey, it was free!

snaps inner

The size zero fits 5-15 pounds, the 1, 10-25 pounds, and the 2, 20-40 pounds.  All sizes retail for $12.95 in unbleached cotton, and $13.95 in the colors.  I chose the yellow.

Below, the size 0 is on top of the Marvels AIO on the small setting.

The size 0 has an umbilical cord snap down, but can also be used without it.  Below, it is measured with the snap down, then unsnapped and stretched.

Here is the fitted compared to a newborn disposable, and also unsnapped, compared to a size 1 disposable:

Since I don’t have a newborn, I had to enlist a model.  He’s a little smaller than a newborn!

my diaper model

Here he is modeling a preemie newborn diaper, so you can get an idea of size:

After all that, he said his hiney was itchy and he wanted to put the Kissa’s fitted on!

kissaluvs 0 fitted diaperkissa's fitted 0

Much more comfy!!

It’s a little subjective, but I’d say it fits more like a preemie diaper, though it looked similar to the newborn diaper.  My model isn’t a very heavy wetter, so I can’t really speak on the absorbency.  I haven’t cloth diapered a newborn, but I imagine fitteds would be great.  They are breathable and could likely be used coverless, since newborns tend to dirty diapers as soon as you put them on (mine did anyway!) See this on my newborn.

Giveaway: Kissaluvs is offering two diaper giveaways, which will be drawn separately.  Winners choose size and color of a Kissa’s Fitted!  The first is open to anyone and will be business as usual.  The second diaper will be drawn from entrants who already own a Kissaluvs product, and leave a review(s) of it.

Cloth Diapers Discount Fitted Diapers Giveaway Made in the USA Natural Fiber Diapers Retailers Review

Play All Day Hemp Fleece Diaper Review and Giveaway from EcoMom – Plus a discount! (CLOSED 8/10) U.S. & Canada

>

I’ve already told you about Eco-Friendly Baby Products – EcoMom, when I reviewed the Plum/Revolution Foods products.  I’m very happy that EcoMom is expanding their cloth diaper offerings!  I was originally supposed to review the gDiapers (several readers have asked about them) but they were such a popular new item, they weren’t able to let me review them just yet.  Hopefully soon!
EcoMom has competitive pricing and offers free shipping on any $75 order every day.  However, they also offer the EcoPass.  The EcoPass is $99 for the year ($8.25/mo) and gets you free shipping plus 15% off of all orders!  At this time, there are no restrictions on that.  It’s good on both oversize and expensive items!
EcoMom has a new feature, the “daily deal.”  As an EcoPass holder, you would be entitled to buy the daily deals (plus new products!) before anyone else, and that free shipping would really make it a deal!
Also, check out their “What Does EcoMom® Mean to Me” – Video Contest and you could win a $200 shopping spree!

The diaper EcoMom sent me is an organic hemp fleece fitted diaper by Play All Day.

The diaper is 55% hemp and 45% organic cotton fleece.  I received a size medium, which fits 16-28 pounds.

The body of the diaper has 3 layers of organic hemp fleece, while the soaker has two.  Edges are all serged.

The diaper is sized pretty generously to fit a wide range, but the snap overlaps help fit smaller babies.

Like other hemp/organic cotton products, it needed to be washed and dried 3 times on hot before use, to remove the natural oils.  It will continue to gain absorbency through 8-9 washes.

After prepping, the diaper became, um, more fleece-y looking.  I am sure there is a word for that, but it escapes me!

The first time I tried the diaper on my son, I didn’t double the soaker, and used it coverless.

Even though my son is on the smaller side, at around 18 pounds, I got a good fit.

We have used the diaper several times already.  The first time, he “christened” it quickly, as he always does with new diapers.  The second time, we got about an hour and a half out of it coverless, before I noticed some dampness on the outside in the wet zone.

With a cover, the absorbency is great.  I think this would make an excellent night time diaper with a good cover or wool soaker, possibly adding a doubler for a very heavy wetter.

Hemp is excellent in a diaper, since it is very absorbent, without being bulky!  The MSRP of the size medium is $17.50.

EcoMom is offering one reader a $15 gift certificate.  Use it on a diaper, or anything you like from their store!  This is open to the U.S. and Canada!

All of my readers may enter discount code SBBL287 at checkout and receive 15% off of your order through 8/31/10!
