Buttons Diapers – An Affordable AI2 Cloth Diaper System

Change-Diapers received product samples at no cost for review purposes. We were not otherwise compensated for this post and all opinions are our own. Buttons Diapers were designed by a husband and wife team in Washington, and are CPSIA certified after being manufactured responsibly in China.

One size covers are designed to fit babies from 9-35 pounds and have inserts and doublers that snap in (or use your favorite absorbency laid inside).

@Buttons_Diapers #clothdiapers via @chgdiapers 1

Covers have a single row of closure snaps with a hip snap and overlap, a snap down rise and belly elastic.

PUL is thick and sturdy and each cover has double gussets to contain messes.

I received a daytime microfiber insert which is 4 layers of microfiber topped with soft microfleece. Inserts are available in small (9-20 lbs) or large (20-35 lbs). Need more absorbency? You can choose a 4 layer hemp/cotton blend insert that is also topped with microfleece. Night time doublers are available in small or large sizes and are 5 layers of hemp/organic cotton or 6 layers of microfiber to snap beneath the daytime insert and get your baby through the night dry.

My son is 3 years old and a petite 28 lbs. He wears the medium rise setting of most diapers but I put him in the large:

@Buttons_Diapers #clothdiapers via @chgdiapers 17 @Buttons_Diapers #clothdiapers via @chgdiapers 18
@Buttons_Diapers #clothdiapers via @chgdiapers 19

I’ve never been able to get a great fit on him with any diaper that has belly elastic since he’s on the slender side & it tends to slide down. Even so the diaper worked very well for him and we had no leaks or issues.

Katie tried the diaper on her 27 lb chunky 1 year old. She also used it on the largest rise setting and said it reminds her of another brand with similar snap in inserts, but was a bit bigger and fit her chubby son better. She was also able to swap another brand inserts in. The snap in insert is great since it stays in place as he has started walking.

@Buttons_Diapers #clothdiapers via @chgdiapers 4 (1)

The double gussets keep messes in and the double thickness PUL is nice for a heavy wetter. Katie also received the daytime insert and noted that additional absorbency would be needed for night time. The front elastic is perfect for her tummy sleeper since it keeps the diaper right against his belly with no gap for leaking.

One size covers retail for $11 for solids and $12.50 for prints. Microfiber inserts are $3.50 each and hemp/cotton inserts are $7.75 each.

    I have a buttons diaper and it worked great for us. My son is a big boy though so he grew out of it by about 20 months. Until that point though it didn’t leak and is so easy to put together.

    I have tried Buttons diapers and I love them! They are extremely absorbent! I can’t use the nighttime doubler with my son as it’s basically a waste of an insert, he just doesn’t need it even through his 12 hours of sleep at night.

    We have 4 Buttons covers coming in the mail and I can’t wait to get them washed and in rotation. We desperately need them since we only have 3 Econobum covers right now for a 16 month old boy with a baby girl due any day now. Hopefully they perform as well as our Econobum do. 🙂

    I have two Buttons covers, and I have to say, I was VERY impressed with the quality. They are thick and feel nothing like “China Cheapies”. I didn’t buy any of their inserts (yet) but they works great over our pinned GMD wide prefolds. They are wide through the crotch like a Flip, and they are generously sized. They were one of the last one size covers my giant 3yo outgrew when she PL, and now they fit my equally giant 13m old great on the middle rise setting.

    Thank you for comparing the fit of the diaper on two large-ish kids. I have had trouble with a couple of diapers fitting my daughter when she was still well below the weight limit of the diaper, so I like to see real experiences with the fit of the diapers. I’m happy to see that there are hemp/organic cotton inserts for nighttime use. Those have worked well for us in the past.
