Cloth Diaper Advice – Mailbox Mondays 8/20/12 – Dirty Cloth Wipes

Dirty Cloth Wipes via @chgdiapers

If you have a cloth diaper question, never fear; Monday is here! Each week, I answer a user question, and ask my readers what they think.

Questions don’t have to be cloth diaper related, just email maria at change-diapers.com with “Mailbox Mondays” in the subject, or fill out my contact form for readers, which you will always be able to find on my Contact Page.

Krystal says:

What do you do with cloth wipes once your little one is past the exclusively breast fed point. I just started food with my little girl and am trying to figure out what to do with her new (quite disgusting) poops! Do you spray off the cloth wipe too once you’re done? Do you use a disposable to get the gushy part off the bum and clean up with a cloth wipe? Am I missing something? Help!

I use exclusively cloth wipes, and I do not own a diaper sprayer. I treat wipes the same way I do diapers (I’ll try not to make this too graphic/gross!) I shake off any shakable solids into the toilet, then the rest goes into the wash. If it is a really messy diaper that doesn’t easily shake off (common when you are first starting solids, a.k.a. peanut butter consistency) I may take a square or two of TP and scrape it a bit.

If I have a lot of dirty diapers on wash day, I might run them through a rinse and spin separately before adding the rest of the diapers, but I have only once had to clean a little poop out of my washer, and that was because I washed a poopy diaper that hadn’t been cleaned off at all (hubby had changed it and I didn’t realize it was full of poop before tossing it in!)

What do you do with poopy wipes?

P.S. Did I say “poop” enough? Wonder what kind of search engine traffic this post will bring me? LOL

i swish/dunk dipes in the toilet to get most of the poo off, then rinse fully in the sink

with wipes, i just rinse in the sink until done then everything goes in the wet bag until wash day 🙂

When I take the diaper off, I scrape it along his bum to get as much as possible into the diaper (which will be taken to the toilet for some method of poop disposal). Anything that gets on the wipes goes into the diaper pail, and then into the washing machine. I’ve had a few instances where I’ve found some poop residue in the washing machine after the cycle is through (usually in the inner gasket of my front loader) and if so, I run a second cycle with soap again, and it’s always dissolved and gone by that point! 🙂 I suppose you could take the wipe to the toilet if you really want to, but that’s just too much work for me! I’d rather wash my diapers twice on occasion than have to do more work than I need to 😉

I mostly use the diaper to scrape the bulk off the butt and swish the diaper in the toilet. I just put wipes straight in the bag. We don’t have a sprayer. My husband is much more particular and spends time swishing and dunking every wipe.

I use the diaper to “get” most of it, then finish up with the wipes. Then do whatever you normally do with the diaper (spray, swish), and throw it all in the pail. I have never sprayed or swished a wipe.

my son is 21 months and i have never sprayed our wipes either- i just try to wipe the majority of the poo off with the diaper itself as i remove it and then use the wipes to get the rest! then i do the shake in the potty thing & wipe the rest off into the toilet with the wipe. voila! not the most fun thing ever, but it works alright! 😀

I have a 16 month old and have never sprayed wipes. I just throw them in the pail and wash. They come out completely clean.
