Flip Trainers Review – Updated 11/11/13

Flip Trainer 33 small side

Post contains affiliate links, I purchased this product myself. I finally received the Flip Trainer I ordered the day the new products/colors/prints were announced! My son is 2 1/2 and isn’t terribly interested in the potty. He was doing pretty well before the baby arrived, but backpedaled a little bit. I know that’s normal and I’m not concerned! I was, however, excited that Cottonbabies had created a trainer, because I knew it would be good!

The trainers are available in all 13 colors and 2 prints, including the new Albert print (what I chose.)

Flip Trainer 4 Flip Trainer 5

The trainers come with a reusable, waterproof PUL shell and 5 organic soaker pads. Each set retails for $24.95. Additional soaker pads are available in packs of 3 for $17.95, and the side panels are available separately for $5.95 a set (so you can customize the look of the trainer.) Unfortunately, the shells aren’t available for purchase separately. Update shells are now available for $17.95 each and sets contain a shell & 3 inserts for $29.95. The shell/5 pad set I bought is no longer available.

The trainer unsnaps on the side to make it easy to handle messes, and the sides are stretchy for a snug fit and to make them easy to pull on and off.

They have both front and back elastic, along with gentle leg elastic.

I love the Albert print!!

Flip Trainer 12 rise snaps Flip Trainer 13 inner

The trainers have the snap down rise we’ve come to expect from Cottonbabies (trainers are estimated to fit 20-50 lbs and 18 months to 4T), and the inner is wipeable PUL.

Flip Trainer 14 front soaker attachment Flip Trainer 15 back soaker attachment

Soakers attach to the front and back of the trainers with hook & loop. There is a “laundry tab” to press on top during washing to avoid snags.

The soakers have additional loop, as well as folding guidelines to attach them when the trainer is on the small or medium setting. You can put the extra absorbency in the back for a girl, or the front for a boy.

In addition to the rise adjustment, there are also two settings for the waist.

Flip Trainer 21 two waist settings

The adjustment is done via the rear side panel snaps. You can put each panel at the smaller setting, each at the larger setting, or one on each to get the right fit for your child.

Flip Trainer 21-2 largest leg opening

Between the rise setting and the waist setting, the leg opening gets quite large!

Here’s the smaller waist setting measured flat and stretched (I stretched the trainer, then had to let go and place it on the tape measure since I only have two hands, LOL.)

and the larger setting:

Here’s the small rise setting measured folded & stretched:

The small setting is fairly similar to the medium Bumgenius (this is a medium 3.0 AIO.)

My son has become very picky about diapers. He doesn’t want to be changed most of the time, and when he does, he wants specific diapers. He is not into anything new at all. I mean he freaked.out. when I put this on him. So I put it on him, then took it right off. Therefore, I unfortunately have no idea how it actually absorbs or performs! I tried to tell him that when he uses the potty, he can decide what undies he wears, but he didn’t go for it, LOL! Update performs great! Soaker pads are quite absorbent.

Here he is in the small setting at 2 1/2 years old and about 28+ pounds.

It was easy to put on and easy to take off, and fit him quite well (with tons of room to grow.)

Update 11/11/13

We are using these at night time on my 4.5 year old, and they fit him wonderfully. He is between 33 & 35 lbs & rather petite, but not scrawny. He prefers to wear them over his undies because then it is “just to catch accidents” rather than a diaper.

The inserts are plenty absorbent to catch big or small accidents, and the trainers actually fit my 50 lb 8.5 year old (snugly.) She tried them on over her leggings to show my son they were not a diaper, LOL. Since we are using them at night, the ability to swap out inserts doesn’t matter too much to us. I can air out the cover & reuse, but I tend to just wash the whole thing.

My son is 16 months and I’d like to see if he’s interested in the potty soon 🙂 I have another boy on the way (due in June) so it would be great if I could get my first out of diapers before the next comes. I’m new to cloth diapering so I’d love to try these.

Thank you for this great giveaway! My son is just about potty trained, but my sister’s son (5 months younger than my little guy) is still struggling. She’s resorted to disposable training pants and feels awful about it. I’d LOVE to win her this kit. I really think it would help him learn when he’s wet much better than those sposies she is using.

Would love to win for when we have to potty train DD 2. I never had any side-snapping trainers with DD1 b/c we started using cloth late with her and she only had problems with wetting during sleep. So I know these would be helpful for the full training experience. Plus, we love our Flips! Thanks for the giveaway!

Wow, how awesome! How do you enter the giveaway? I use Flip and Bum Genius on my 13-month-old now, but we will be needing trainers probably in the next 6 months or so. By the way, I love your blog and I love that you’re doing this! It will really help out whoever wins, because I know from personal experience, raising kids ain’t cheap!

I received an Albert and Lovelace just before Christmas. My daughter is a bit young to start training, but I LOVED the concept and the price was so reasonable. And yes, I ordered an Albert for my daughter. I have lots of kiddos that love math in my house — both girls and boys.

P.S. Like you I was surprised to learn that Flip doesn’t plan to sell the trainer covers separately, at least not at this time. I thought that was odd since they were selling extra inserts separately. In my opinion, I think it would be nice to have a couple of covers on hand just in case the accident isn’t a urine one. Poopy accidents are messy and tend to get on covers, at least in my experience they do.
