GEN-Y Simply U Diaper Cover Review & Giveaway (10/22) U.S. & Canada

I received a cover at no cost for review purposes. I was not otherwise compensated for this post and all opinions are my own. Until now, my experience with GEN-Y was limited to their (awesome) GO bag. GEN-Y sent me a Simply U cover, which is a new side-snapping cover made of jersey PUL. The cover is available in 2 sizes and 6 candy inspired color combinations. Like all GEN-Y products, the Simply U covers are made in the U.S.A.

I received the size large, which GEN-Y estimates to fit 18-38 lbs. The small is estimated to fit babies 6-18 lbs. The Simply U is different from the Universals in that they are solid jersey PUL (with contrasting binding) rather than having a printed cotton outer. Simply U Covers are $18.99 each vs $21.99 for the Universals.

The cover has front and rear flaps to hold cloth or disposable inserts, trifolded prefolds or pad folded flats in place. Both the inner and outer of the cover are surprisingly soft. The leg gussets are designed to hold in anything your baby can “dish out,” the cover has front and rear elastic, and there are 4 side-snap settings.

The cover has a snap down rise, giving you two size settings to use as your baby grows, or so you can have a higher rise to cover fitteds. Although GEN-Y calls these “small” and “large” I think of these as a dual-size system since two sizes cover the gamut.

A really cool feature of these covers is the seemingly out of place middle snap, below the rise snaps. This allows you to use the cover with bulky fitteds, and also super-trim inserts. When you use a trim insert, snap this snap to reduce the “poof.” There’s no need to have a separate stash of covers for different occasions (trim covers for inserts, roomy covers for fitteds.) If you’re confused, keep reading, I have photos to demonstrate!

Here is the smallest setting measured folded and laid flat (I usually measure stretched, but since a lot of the stretch is in the legs, I ended up popping the snaps open when I tried to fully stretch it!)

Here is the largest setting measured folded and stretched (as best I could stretch it – most of the stretch is in the legs!)

First I tried the cover with a super trim hemp jersey insert:

Here my son is in the neighborhood of 22 pounds at 21.5 months old, in the smallest rise setting (of the large cover):

Below also pictures the trim hemp insert, but on the larger rise setting:

Here’s what the cover looks like with a trim insert, without that extra snap done to deflate the “poof”:

Next I tried the cover with a trifolded hemp fleece prefold, which is about 3 times the thickness of the insert (maybe more, didn’t compare exactly!)

Here is a close-up of the leg gusset, and what the cover looks like with the center snap done:

Again my son is 22ish pounds at 21.5 months old, this time with the trifolded hemp fleece prefold in the cover:

I had an easy time adjusting the waist & leg snaps independently to get just the right fit, and the cover worked just as well with a bulkier WAHM made fitted:
