Cloth Diapering Mailbox Mondays

Mailbox Mondays 1/10/11 – I’m asking you some questions!

>

 email me

Another week with no Mailbox Mondays submissions!  Remember that submitted questions don’t have to be cloth diaper related.  Email maria at change-diapers.com with “Mailbox Mondays” in the subject.

Since this makes two weeks with no submissions, I’ll put the MM posts on hold.  If I get a submission, I will publish it, otherwise I will post something else/skip etc.

Today I think I’ll ask you some questions instead.

1. People choose to cloth diaper for many reasons.  Financial, environmental or health concerns, or even because they are just so gosh darn cute!  What was your main motivator for using cloth?

2. What was your very first cloth diaper?  Do you still have it?

3. What is your favorite brand/type of diaper?  Has your favorite changed over time?

4. Have you overcome any obstacles with cloth (eg. detergent/stink issues, yest, rash, leaks, night time solutions etc.)

5. Is there a brand of diaper you’re interested in, that you’d like to see me review?  Is there a diaper you’re just dying to win?  One you don’t see given away much, or just one you keep entering to win but don’t win?

Anything else you have to say for yourself?  🙂

    >1. I chose to use cloth because it is cheaper, but I became addicted to the cuteness ;)2. My first diapers were a rumparooz and a bumgenius elemental. I still have both of these.3. My favorite is probably the thirsties duo diaper. I just love it 🙂 I couldn't commit to just one brand/ style though. 4. I haven't had challenges yet :)5. I have sooo many brands I want to try! Apple Cheeks, AMP, Tots Bots, Lil Joeys, Flip, Babykicks, etc.

    >My main motivation was financial. We were looking to buy a house, and wanted to be able to buy food as well. 🙂 Actually, my HUBBY(!) was the one to suggest looking into cloth diapering! who knew!?! Neither of us had any idea about modern cloth diapering, although a friend had recently started using fuzzibunz. Our first diapers were some snappi-able QSFW (Quick Snap Flap Wraps [pattern here: http://jayejaye.freeyellow.com/diapers/sns/QSFWpatt.pdf and pics here: http://wayneandnaomi.blogspot.com/2009/12/cloth-diapers-sewing-phase.html%5D) that I made from old flannel sheets. It's a year later, and we still have them! I even attempted to make covers out of a windbreaker jacket…they worked for about a month before the water proofing washed away. I bought some used diapers from a cloth diaper store, but didn;t know what I was doing, so I think I bought a few dud pockets and a swim diaper. :S oops.I like my fitteds and covers, although we use pockets for ds overnight and bumessentials AI2 for dd. I still have not bought any fitted diapers, only made them. My favorite covers are the thirsties I have for my daughter. Roomy, super flexible and fun colors. I also like my HH OS cover in cow hide, my daughter calls it her "Cow Butt" cover. :DWe had to overcome stink a little bit. I can't quite remember in the end what solved it, but I remember gagging when putting the diapers into the washer, whew the ammonia! I think I added a little more detergent and an extra pre-wash cycle. Can't recall if you've reviewed them or not, but I would love to try a thirsties fab fitted. they look so gorgeous. I'm also always kinda looking out for snappiable fitted diapers. It seems to me that most places only sell aplix or snaps, not no-closure diapers. I'm sure tehy are out there, but I am also a bit of a cheap arse when it comes to buying things. I think the most I've spent on a diaper is $12 and it nearly killed me. 😀 I usually try to get two or three covers for that much, used of course, from diaperswappers or whatever.

    >I’m sorry you haven’t had many MM submissions! I’ve submitted a few myself, but I always have questions I could ask. My husband actually said he may have a question or 2 from the “dad” side of things.1. We decided to cloth diaper before we decided when to have children. Our original reason was to keep chemicals off of our baby. Our second reason was to lessen our impact on the environment.2. Our first cloth diaper was a gDiaper. We still have it, but it doesn’t fit anymore. It didn’t get used much because it never fit our son very well. We quickly switched to bumGenius 3.0’s and loved them for about 6 months.3. Our favorite brand right now is Dream-Eze. They are super absorbent and easy to use. Our favorite type/system is fitteds and covers. I use prefolds often, but prefer fitteds. Our stash is constantly evolving as our son grows. Each diaper fits differently and may change as their body changes.4. We have overcome every obstacle listed above! We had stink issues with our microfiber inserts just like everyone else has had. We finally gave up and sold our BG 3.0’s for that reason. We finally found a diaper detergent that works well and we are in love with it! Our son has very sensitive skin, so every time we switched detergent, he would end up with a rash or yeast infection. It took us a while to find a detergent that he didn’t have a reaction to.5. I would love to see you review/give away a GroVia OS AIO! I have tried one and believe that they are the best of all worlds! I would love to have more of them in our stash!I just want to thank you for your blog! I check every day to see if you have posted something new. I love reading your posts! It is January, so most blogs have slowed down for now. I look forward to reading more soon!

    >ACK! I've had an email in the works for you for Mailbox Mondays, but that got put on a back burner and then forgotten about. 😛 I will try to remember to finish that this week!1. My journey to cloth diapers started when I was introduced to mama cloth pads in college. I was so bowled over by the difference in personal comfort between plastic and cloth, that it just became the next logical step to choose not to put my baby in plastic, either.2. My first diapers were prefolds, flats, and covers. I absolutely loved the Thirsties Duo Wrap! I still use the small prefolds as gDiaper inserts, and the flats are great for all sizes. I actually wrote a post about flats not too long ago: http://downrightdomesticity.blogspot.com/2010/11/in-praise-of-humble-flat.html3. I'm kind of broke, so I'm still with the prefolds, flats, and gDiapers. But I'm in the process of designing and sewing my own diapers, and so far, those are my favorite. 😛 4. Still working on the detergent issue (which my email to you is about, actually). :-D5. I really, really want a BabyKicks 3G! And I've had such great success with the Thirsties Duo Wrap, that I'd love to try their Duo Diaper.

    >1) my main motivator is cost but cutting down on waste is another. i still don't have it down to a science yet since this is the first time using cloth and there are so many options. it took me 4 moths just to decide i was going to start buying them a few at a time. my son is now 5 months old. i can't believe there are so few stores selling cloth. i had to blindly order from the internet i think thats really what took so long to start. 2) my first cloth diaper was a custom made. silly me didn't realize i needed a cover and my first of many mistakes were made!i still have the diaper just need to find a well fitting cover.3)right now i think i have to say i like the pocket diapers the best but i don't have a favorite brand but HH and thirsties are up there!4)right now my biggest issues are a small rash and being afraid to use crams that might impare the absorbancy of the diaper, 2nd issue is poop since my landlord will now let me hook up a sprayer i find myself trying to scrape off paste like poop into the garbage can. i was trying to avoid using the disposable inserts but i think i'm stuck. ANYONE GOT A BETTER IDEA? 5)i'm interested in trying some AIO diapers i don't think i care about the brand but i'd like my mom to be able to use the cloth when she's watching him or anyone who's never used cloth.

    >I guess I just don't have questions to ask for MM =/ YET! but …1. My main motivator for using cloth was, cuteness & cost. to be honest, i'm not looking at it environmentally. i should, but i'm being honest. i was reading a magazine article and i'm more of a hip-hop mama, urban ethics. i seen some urban mama's with cloth of their babies & i thought it was adorable! i had always felt like cloth was for "hippies" until i realized, everybody is doing it! so i did more research and i'm hooked and i'm hookin' my friends up too!2. i just started cloth about a month ago. i had bought seconds prefolds and seconds blueberry covers. my son is actually wearing both today. i go about and just whatever brand. i am not loyal to any brand yet. 3. my favorite so far has to be bumgenius AIO's. 4. i haven't had any problems besides stains. i can't get them out. people say to use sunning but that does NOT work for me. i had used pre-treatment and it worked but apparently it wasnt cloth diaper safe, so now i have to depend on sunning.5. honestly, i am up for any diaper for me to add to my stash. like i said above, i am not loyal to any brand. i want to try as much as possible.

    >1. Cost. I do also try to choose habits that produce less waste, so it fit there too.2. I used flats when he was first home from the hospital. I still use them as a small part of my stash. He has one (well, two) on now.3. Favorite brand is prefolds with covers. I like Thirsties Duo Wraps and Bummis Super Brite but I like to try a variety. When he was littler I stuck to one type of diaper (regular Thirsties) because my husband was doing more diaper changes as a stay at home dad, and he didn't like variety.4. I used to think that he was allergic to synthetic inners (bumGenius) but it was actually the detergent I was using; it "stuck" to synthetic fibers and gave him a rash, but it washed out of the prefolds and didn't bother him.5. I am interested in the Bummis Super Lite because they are economical, sized, and trim, and have no white binding to get stained. Cute colors as well. Anything else to say? I am interested in learning more about donating cloth diapers to people in the US or other countries. I am thinking about having a diaper sewing day and asking people from my church to donate old flannel blankets, old bath towels, etc. and make a bunch of simple diapers and wipes for the cloth diaper foundation. It is still just in the "idea" phase. I was fortunate enough to have some help getting started with cloth (family kept an eye out on Craigslist for me), and would like to pass that help on to another family.

    >Main motivator was money but what really pushed us was the CONSTANT leaking of disposables. She'd pee straight out the side while I was trying to nurse her, it wouldn't even hit the diaper.2. first cloth diapers were prefolds. My friend is holding onto them, but not using them, which annoys me, but I was trying so hard to get her to try them. This is her third kid and I think she's planning more. She has the idea behind it, but not the gumption. After all she's gone through, she's still afraid of poop.3. favorite is still bum genius pocket4. yes obstacle with hard water. switched to tide.5. I'd like to try a tot bots or one of those kissaluvs marvels AIO that's multisize?
