We’re starting pureed foods, and I’m making my own. I was wondering if anyone had suggestions for storage containers to freeze the food. Also, I was wondering if I should breastfeed my son before trying to feed him the puree? Thanks!

None of my 3 children were ever feed canned/jarred baby food, but none were huge fans of purees either! With my first child, I used a combination of the blender and food mill to puree foods after steaming or baking and make homemade baby food. I froze the purees in ice cube trays with lids, then popped them out and stored in labeled freezer bags.

My second child seemed to associate purees with the vomiting resulting from his F.P.I.E.S., so we didn’t do purees for long with him. When I had my third child, we skipped the purees and stuck with soft pieces of food he could pick up and feed himself!

Breast milk or formula should be your child’s primary source of nutrition for the first year (foods before 1 are just for fun is a catch phrase you’ve probably heard before!) so you should typically nurse baby before giving any “solid” foods.

Did you make homemade baby food? How did you store it?

I loved using my pressure cooker to soften up sweet potatoes and other healthy foods back when my son was just starting solids. This summer, we have loved making homemade smoothies. I store them in reusable food pouches. When we go out, I throw the frozen-solid pouch in the diaper bag, and an hour or so later, it’s the perfect consistency and still nice and cold!
