Lunapads Maia Hipster Lunapanties Aren’t Your Typical Period Undies!

I received product free to review. I was not otherwise compensated for this post, and all opinions are my own. Thanks to years of pregnancy and breastfeeding, I’ve only recently been able to begin using menstrual cups and cloth pads, including the Lunapads I received to review a few years ago. Lunapads sent me a pair of their Lunapanties in the Maia hipster style to review, and I wasn’t sure if I should be excited to try them, or be dreading it like every other month. 😉

I’ve used the panties for several cycles and I am pleasantly surprised. I’ve used them as my sole protection as well as cup backup.

Lunapanties come in different styles to suit different needs, from thin/light backup protection, leakproof absorbent styles, and moderate/heavy styles like what I received.

These hipsters have bands to allow you to tuck Lunapads liners underneath, so you can swap them out as needed without using an additional snap-on cloth pad.

The undies themselves are stylish and soft, and they also sent me a mesh bag for washing. I received a size small, and when I first saw them I thought they seemed a bit big. Here they are compared to a size small hipster undie I have:

After washing, the difference wasn’t quite as noticeable, but they are a bit bigger:

I found the Lunapanties to be quite comfy, though they came up a bit higher in the back than I’m used to. The leg openings make for no panty-line wearing, which I definitely appreciate! I wore these with liners from the first day of my cycle to the last (I do laundry every other day so I was generally able to use the same pair twice per cycle) and even alone for spotting etc. I tossed both the panties and the liners in with regular laundry (or with diapers if I wasn’t doing laundry that day) and I haven’t had any trouble getting them clean.

I used them with the included liners and the liners from my Lunapads set, swapping liners not quite every time I used the bathroom. I noticed that the liners would sometimes shift a bit, particularly I had to put them back in place if I used the restroom without changing the liner.

I think because I tended to not pull them quite as high in the back as intended, it left a little bit of sag in the rear. For these to work well, I think they need to fit snugly, so I would probably go down to an XS if I bought another pair. The Maia hipsters are made in Canada and have cotton fleece as the absorbency. Each pair retails for $36.99 (save $2 each when you buy 3 or more) and they’re available in sizes from XS to 3XL in your choice of regular or organic cotton. I appreciate that the models on the Lunapads site are women of all shapes and sizes, and they haven’t been photoshopped beyond recognition!

I asked about the Alexandria hipster since they seemed a bit lower rise based on the stock photos. The Alexandria is very similar, but this style has microfiber for absorbency, is made in Egypt, and retails for $26.99 (available in XS-XL.)

Lunapanties are awesome to have as a backup for a cup since I find them to be far trimmer and more comfortable than wearing a cloth liner. You can find styles in bikini, brief and even thong varieties.
