Potty training can be a tumultuous transition whether you use disposable diapers or cloth. Using cloth diapers during potty training made things a bit more relaxed for us since we didn’t feel the pressure to train to avoid buying increasingly more expensive diapers or pull ups. As disposables get larger, there are fewer in the package, but with cloth it doesn’t cost you much of anything to toss a handful of diapers in with a load of laundry. On the other hand, that means you don’t have that extra motivation either!
Here are some things that have gone through my mind when potty training!
Pro: Baby’s no longer wearing diapers, yay! 😀
Con: Baby’s no longer wearing (cloth) diapers, boo 🙁
Pro: Not having to lug diapers with you on outings
Con: Having to lug spare underwear and pants with you on outings (not to mention mad dashes to find a bathroom or hearing that little voice from the back seat saying “I need to go potty!” when you are nowhere near one)
Pro: Adorable eeny teeny toddler underwear
Con: No excuse to buy fun cloth diaper prints (But you need some cloth trainers, right? Hee hee)
Pro: No more washing cloth diapers
Con: Possibly washing lots of clothing and bedding (possibly mopping floors and/or cleaning carpet too)
Pro: (For disposable diaper users) no need to buy more diapers
Con: (For cloth diaper users) no excuse reason need to buy more diapers
My slacker mom potty training method worked great with my daughter and again for my son. My youngest seemed to need a bit more prodding/encouragement and I’m sure it looked like I wasn’t potty training because I love cloth diapers!
Once potty training is over (especially when the child can wipe him/herself – hello awesome) it’s worth every accident but in the beginning, it can be a little “meh.” Having a toddler who wants me to sit in the bathroom and make eye contact while he’s on the toilet kinda makes you miss the days of him hiding behind the couch to poop. Well, until he does that again and you have to change it.
Were/are you excited for potty training, dreading it, or a little of both?
