Cloth Diaper Advice – Mailbox Mondays 3/21/11

higher rise #clothdiapers via @chgdiapers

Every Monday, I will answer reader submitted questions, and ask you to add your opinions.

Questions don’t have to be cloth diaper related, just email maria at change-diapers.com with “Mailbox Mondays” in the subject, or Fill out my contact form for readers, which you will always be able to find on my Contact Page.

I didn’t receive any submissions this week, but as you all know, I will always answer questions via email.  I thought I’d summarize two emails I received this week, since others may be having the same issues, and see what you all think!

M. has a 6 month old, 22 lb baby who has a pretty high rise.  She was looking for one-size pockets with a high enough rise to cover his crack!  She doesn’t have too many commercial diapers, but did recently win a Best Bottom diaper in a giveaway.

The highest rise diapers I have are the Bumgenius 4.0, Flip, Fuzzibunz Perfect Size Medium and Thirsties Duo Diaper Size 2.

I grabbed a few of my diapers to compare and found that the Bumgenius 4.0 unsnapped is a smidge bigger than the Best Bottom unsnapped, by about an inch.  The BG 4.0 and FB medium are about the same size when stretched, but the FB is actually a smidge bigger when folded.  The Thirsties size 2 is very similar to the Bumgenius.

How about you guys?  Have you found a diaper with a nice, high rise?

A. received a few used diaper covers, but they smelled like smoke.  She did a soak and triple rinsed, but they still smelled smoky.  She was looking for a way to get the smell out without damaging the diapers.

That is definitely something to remember to ask, whether you’re buying used dipes, or from a WAHM.  Is this a smoke free home and do you have any pets (if you have pet allergies.)  That said, it’s something I always forget to ask!!

The two things I thought to try were baking soda or vinegar.  Soak the covers in a tub with water and a generous helping of baking soda, then rinse rinse rinse or do the same with vinegar.  I’ve heard about people using “oxyvin,” or oxyclean and vinegar, to strip really icky diapers.  The oxy clean and vinegar create a chemical reaction (use caution!!) to clean the diapers.

How about you all, have you had to get smoke smell out of diapers?  What worked?

Not so sure about the rise issues but know one time when my husband was smoking near where the diapers were drying out side the only thing that worked t get the smell out was washing and air drying outside for 24 hr. ps I was pregnant at the time and could smell everything!

Oh boy, that pregnancy sense of smell is the worst! You can tell that someone 50 feet from you had garlic last night. 😉

    >For higher rise, I really like my Fuzzibunz One Size diapers. I haven't had smoke in a diaper, but I've received stuffed animals and some clothes w/ smoke in them and washing them twice usually works to get the smell out. I've used Kirkland (Costco brand) detergent as well as some other CD safe detergents.

    >My thought for the smoke would be to hang them outside in the wind/sun for a couple days. I got some smokey baby clothes as a gift and left them in the garage for a couple weeks (because it was the dead of winter)–even that minimal "fresh air" cleared out the stink. I'm sure being in the actual wind/sun would help even more.Good luck!

    >I'm the one with the infamous "high-rise" baby, lol. Thank you all very much for your information! I have a BG 4.0 and Thirties Duo in the mail, so I'll put them to the test soon! And now I'll have to try the Tiny Tush and Knickernappies! (any excuse for more fluff will do :-P) I actually have a FB Perfect Size medium, and it seems to do the job all right, but it is very tight on my son's chunky thighs. Thank you for your suggestions!

    >Thanks Katie, that is great info! I don't have a Bum Essentials or Knckernappeis OS (I have a sized KN though.)

    >Ok, I made my first comment while my son was napping. After he woke up I did some comparison and it seems that my Tiny Tush is a little bigger than the BG 4.0, but not by that much. The Knickernappies OS and the bumEssentials also look like they have a little higher rise than the BG 4.0, but again not by a whole lot. I'd say my Knickernappies looks the highest out of my stash, although it's not my favorite because I prefer the front snapping diapers to the side-snap. And it doesn't seem like my Knickernappies OS will get as little on a small baby (the waist just doesn't get as small I think). Again, good luck!

    >I'm going to agree with Amy that I think my Tiny Tush diaper has the highest rise! good luck!

    >Awesome, thanks. I think I'll give one a try (my biggest hesitation is that my daughter is about 29lbs). The 30lb upper limit makes me nervous, but I'd love it to work for her seeing that baby #2 is due in early June. 🙂

    >The mediums are uite large! I haven't tried a large though. My review has pics & measurements if you want to compare! http://www.change-diapers.com/2010/10/fuzzibunz-perfect-size-diaper-review.html

    >So, the FuzziBunz medium is about the same size as a bumGenius 4.0 unsnapped? I've been looking for a perfect size pocket, but didn't know what size FuzziBunz to try. A 4.0 unsnapped fits my daughter great.

    >Oh darn, I forgot the Tiny Tush! I just put it on my son so I can't compare. That one is fairly new to me, so it slipped my mind. But you're right, it is quite large too!*blush* So glad the blog is helpful! 🙂

    >I just got a tiny tush, and let me tell you there is nothing tiny about it! I think it has the highest rise of any of the diapers I've tried so she might look into those.Oh, and Maria, I just wanted to thank you for your awesome reviews and great advice! I don't always comment but I read every post!

    >I don't need a high rise for my baby but I did sell off a Thirsties Duo 2 because it was just too much dipe. (I loved the print to death.) We use FB and they fit marvelous, along with a BG or two. I once got a few boxes of clothes from a mama who had a wood stove. The smoke smell was awful. My baby smelled like a campfire and made me crave marshmallows. I know its not diapers but the smell did eventually come out after a few regular washes.

    >Lower rise diapers aren't necessarily a problem, but when your baby has plumbers crack, that could make a big mess. 😉

    >When it comes to lower rise diapers, is there a fear of leakage? I only have BG 3.0 & 4.0 in my stash, but sometimes I see reviews and I swear those diapers are hanging off the babes!
