Update: Over the Moon has new owners!
Established cloth diaper business for sale
Over the Moon Diapers opened their doors in 2012 and has built a beautiful website (www.overthemoondiapers.com), Facebook page (www.facebook.com/OvertheMoonDiapers/) and has an email list of well over 2,000 subscribers. This established cloth diaper business is for sale!
Their circumstances have changed and they not been able to devote the time and attention that is required to sustain the growth the store is experiencing. They’re currently an online only business model and want to sell the business to someone who has the passion to move the company forward.
I asked the owners a few questions about the store for anyone curious!
What gave you the idea to start Over the Moon Diapers?
Four years ago, we noticed that there was a thriving community of natural-minded parents in the Memphis area, but there were no local stores that catered to the needs of those parents. We’re both pretty entrepreneurially-minded, and it seemed like a fun challenge and side project to start our own business.
Why did you decide to sell your cloth diaper business and what’s next for you?
After running the business as a side project for several years from home, we were bursting at the seams. We were generating sales of about $10,000 a month from two small rooms only being open about 12 hours a week. We felt like we had to either scale-up big time or start scaling back. We decided to go to an online-only and largely drop-ship only business model in order to regain rooms in the house and time in our schedules. I wanted more time for hobbies, and my daughter decided to go back to work full-time to a job she loved.
Who would be the ideal next owner of Over the Moon Diapers?
First of all, it’s an awful lot of work for just one person – we were always glad to have had two of us in it together! If you’re thinking about doing something like this, consider your investment of time very carefully – we highly recommend doing it with at least one partner.
Over the Moon Diapers needs to be run by go-getters who are technologically savvy. Running a small business is not the kind of job for you if you’re a by-the-book person who needs someone to tell you how to do things. You have to be your own marketing department, your own bookkeeper, your own customer service team, and sometimes your own tech support. You have to be someone who can roll up your sleeves and figure things out for yourself.
Also, while you don’t need to have years upon years of cloth diaper experience to run a store, you should be pretty well-versed in the pros and cons of the different systems and brands that are out there. You should know how to troubleshoot washing issues. And ideally you are someone who’s plugged into a community of natural parents (whether that’s online or local is up to you, but we loved being a local presence).
What will you miss most about it?
Now that we no longer have a physical store, we both really missing meeting the wonderful moms as we had done for several years. Many times we would meet someone who just HAD to check out cloth diapers as soon as they got a positive pregnancy test, and we’d see them occasionally throughout the pregnancy while they figured out everything they wanted. The most fun, of course, was when they came back to show us their new precious little one wearing his or her cloth diapers!
Ok, people are going to want to know – what’s your asking price?
We’re not trying to be evasive here; we will consider all reasonable offers.
Just to clarify, we’re not selling the actual LLC, just our assets – the domain rights, our custom-designed ecommerce website, our logo and the copyright to it, our social media followings, email distribution lists, and any of the vendor accounts that we can legitimately transfer over (there are a few that you’d have to re-apply for as the new owners).
We have put hundreds and hundreds of hours into all of those things and our business has a great reputation. It’s been our baby for four years. We want to pick the right owner to carry it on, and that doesn’t necessarily correspond with the highest offer.
If someone is interested in taking over the business, how can they contact you?
