Thirsties Preemie/Newborn Cloth Diaper Cover vs. XS

I received the newborn cover at no cost. Post contains affiliate links. I was not otherwise compensated for this post and all opinions are my own. As promised when I announced the new Thirsties products, today I’m comparing the XS sized cover to the brand new preemie/newborn cover.

I tried both the size 1 duo wrap and the XS cover on my 6.5 lb newborn in 2011. As I showed in my size 1 duo and XS cover comparison, the small size 1 duo setting is nearly identical to the XS cover.

Since the XS (pictured in green here – this one was purchased several years ago so it does not have the new H&L) fits babies from 6-12 pounds, some wondered why the newborn size (pictured in gray) was needed. I think the preemie newborn cover (fits 4-10 lbs) fills a much needed gap in the product line.

Above I’ve also pictured the size 1 duo in yellow. The preemie/newborn cover is smaller and narrower overall. The differences are subtle but I think it would have been a much better fit on my tiny guy.

The Rumparooz newborn cover is another teeny cover (though the RAR has rise snaps and fits 4-12 lbs). The Thirsties is narrower/trimmer.

Below is the Thirsties preemie/newborn compared to a preemie disposable diaper. (P.S. yes, it’s the same bear – he’s just been extremely well loved in the past 5ish years!)

My son at about 6.5 lbs in the XS cover, with a hemp insert inside:

Even though my son was in the XS size range, I think the preemie/newborn cover would have fit him much better in the early days when he was really tiny and I was trying to keep diapers under his cord stump. Both sizes have an MSRP of $12 and the preemie/newborn is only available in hook & loop closures. The XS is available in hook & loop (both sizes have a smaller 1″ hook & loop vs the 1 1/2″ of the larger sizes) and snap closures.

Have you tried the XS covers? Would you like to try the preemie/newborn?
