Cloth Diaper Advice

If you need cloth diaper help, on Mondays, I answer reader submitted questions, and ask my other readers to weigh in as well.

Questions don’t have to be cloth diaper related, just email maria at change-diapers.com with “Mailbox Mondays” in the subject, or Fill out my contact form for readers, which you will always be able to find on my Contact Page.

No submissions this week, so I figured I’d ramble about things & stuff.
I have said over and over again that I think it’s wise to “diversify your stash,” rather than having a whole stash of just one diaper. Even so, I often wonder hmm…what would I choose if someone said “I’ll buy you a whole stash of cloth diapers, but you have to choose just one brand.”

I have a lot of favorites that I love for various reasons, but I actually think I would choose Bumgenius 4.0 if you held a gun to my head and made me choose (after I told you it was a little nutty to put a gun to my head over cloth diapers of course.) If you’d throw in a stack of Knickernappies Loopydo and Superdo inserts, I’d be really thrilled!

Why do I love them so much? Well, maybe I have a little soft spot since they (Bumgenius 3.0) were the first 6 diapers I bought. 3 of those 6 diapers were replaced under the amazing Bumgenius/Cottonbabies warranty, two are in serious need of aplix replacement, and one still looks and works just about like new, aside from a little pilling etc. That’s after 18 months of use, and during several months of that, those six were washed one or two times every day.

The Bumgenius fit really well and don’t leak. They are what I grab for if I know we are going to be out and about. They are super, super easy to use and are the first my husband reaches for. The improvement of the Velcro on the 4.0 version really sealed the deal for me. They don’t come in tons of colors, but those that they have are nice. I’m very glad the brights are back! When I first started cloth diapering, $17.95 for a diaper seemed spendy, but now it’s really a pretty good deal.

How about you? What would you choose if someone offered to buy you a full stash of just one brand?

So that leads me to the other thing I was thinking about. Cost.

I guess since Bumgenius is sort of my benchmark or gold standard when trying other diapers, I also compare others to their price point. If a diaper is one-size and under $20, I’m there. When it starts creeping up to the $20-$25 range, it had better be cute and have a great track record. I would consider a diaper in the $25-$28 range, but I would honestly be pretty hesitant to spend that much. Especially since the most expensive diapers I’ve ever bought, the Goodmama One and Blueberry Minky (before the price decrease that came with the change to microfiber inserts) turned out to be the most disappointing and biggest wastes of money, leaving a bad taste in my mouth for pricey diapers!

Now, I will admit that I would probably pay more for a diaper that I already knew I loved (like a few WAHMs that are my favorites) that was in a print I was obsessed with (like this Guerilla Fluff diaper I’m still pining over more than a year later. Boo-hoo!!) Or a really special diaper as a keepsake, like baby’s first diaper or something.

What really made me think of this was a lovely newborn diaper that a manufacturer/retailer posted on Facebook Friday. It was a lovely diaper, with a gulp inducing price tag of 35 smackaroos! I think using cloth in the newborn stage is wise, since you can spend a hundred bucks on sposies before you know it, but cloth can be used for multiple children and resold. You can do it the frugal way with prefolds and a few covers, or I guess you can go all out and spend close to $1,000 on some $35 newborn diapers.

What I think is reasonable is hard to define. Just to clarify, by reasonable, I mean reasonable for me. If you have the money and desire, feel free to spend $200 on one of these limited print diapers people collect!

I think it’s one of those things that is difficult to say $xx is reasonable while $yy is not, but if you hear a price, you can say whether it’s low, OK or high. For me, anything over $15 for a newborn diaper makes me thing “jeez, this had better be good!” Of course, the only newborn diapers I have so far I’ve won in giveaways (except one I bought as a second for cheap!) I’d love to have a FuzziBunz X-Small in my stash, but the price tag of $16.95 is pushing my limit. The same really goes for the Happy Heinys mini one size, but at least that has additional sizing possibilities.

Anyway, I’m figuring if I get to cloth diaper a newborn, I’d buy one of each on my wish list (probably enough for a day or so of cloth diapering) and see what I like, then buy a few more (maybe gender specific colors) of what I like best after the baby is born. So far, I haven’t had huge babies, but maybe my excitement over these adorable cloth newbie dipes would get me a chunky 10 pounder ready for one-size diapers at birth, hee hee.

So how about you? Do you have price limits in mind when you’re shopping for cloth? Do you have different limits for newborn diapers? Do you have a particular diaper/print you’re dying for that you’d be willing to pay more for?

Hi Maria! Love your blog! Thanks for all the useful info and reviews 🙂

I’ve been cloth diapering my baby girl since she left the hospital 9 months ago. I love using cloth and have never considered anything else. I’ve overcome any problem we’ve run into and it’s been going great! I’ve traveled with my diapers with no problem, but I’ve always had access to laundry facilities. Which leads me to my questions….

We’re taking a family vacation to Mexico in July (yippie!!). I will definitely be taking my diapers with me, but I will not have access to laundry machines. How do you handwash a load of diapers? I have no problem doing it and am kind of excited for the challenge. I feel like if I can do full-time cloth in Mexico for a week then how could anyone resist considering it? My plan so far is to use my regular pockets and A12s with flushable liners in every change to address the solids. But where do I go from there? Can I use my Rockin’ Green that I love so much? How do I make sure they’re going to be clean? (I should note that I don’t want to use disposable inserts). I’m assuming there will be a bathtub (will double-check with the resort before we leave) and line drying will be easy from our balcony.

I’ve read that handwashing flats is very easy to do and that they dry quickly (that would really help as opposed to the thick microfiber/A12 inserts). So should I reconsider my plan and get flats with some covers instead? Can I just lay the flats inside the cover or do I have to fold and use a Snappi to prevent leaks?

Thanks in advance for your advice!!

-Jess T.

Oh wow, how exciting!  I think it’s awesome that you will be cloth diapering on your trip!  In my opinion, microfiber is the most difficult thing to get clean, and it might be a chore to try to get them clean with handwashing.

Flats are definitely easier to wash and quicker to dry since they unfold, rather than being sewn as thick layers.  You can get a dozen cotton flats for as little as $20 (although hemp is much more, and some brands are more expensive than others.) They can also be very useful around the house when you’ve finished diapering with them.  Buying flats really wouldn’t cost much more than buying a week’s worth of chemical free disposable diapers/liners (which I know you don’t want to do anyway) plus you can reuse them

They are a little more time consuming to use, since you have to fold them.  Just like a prefold, you can snappi them for a more secure fit, or just fold and trifold them, then lay them in a cover.  You can generally use AI2 shells as covers, it will just be more of a tight squeeze over bulky diapers.  You can even use pocket diaper shells as covers, airing them out between uses to get two or so changes out of each one.

As far as hand washing, I would plan to use the detergent you currently use and wash in the bathtub, replicating your current wash routine.

Submerse the diapers in cold or warm water for a soak, swish them around a bit, then rinse (may not really be necessary if you are using liners.)  Then fill the tub with hot water, add your detergent (swish to dissolve completely) and add the diapers.  Let them soak, agitating every so often.  Then drain the water and rinse.  It might be good idea to submerse the diapers an additional time with clean water, to make sure the diapers are rinsed clean.

I know I’ve been a bit all over the place, I think it’s awesome you are doing this, and I hope you have a great time!

So how about the rest of you?  Have you hand washed diapers?  Did you change your routine?  Use different diapers?

Cloth Diaper Advice – Mailbox Mondays 3/28/11 – Diaper Rash/Creams

#clothdiapers rash creams

Madeline says:

Hey Maria,

I have a friend with a newborn who has horrible diaper rash (even in sposies) and has to have medicated diaper cream and A and D ointment on her bottom (the doc wants only the A and D to come off with diaper changes, so the medicated stays on all the time). I suggested fleece liners, but wondered (1) if you have any other suggestions and (2) if you know of any diaper cream that is as thick as Desitin, but is CD safe.

Madeline

Hi Madeline.  Even “cloth safe” creams have to be put on very, very thin in order to not damage the diapers. If she had to use a medicated cream, I’d recommend using a fleece liner for sure. You’re really not going to find anything that thick or medicated that is cloth safe. I never had luck with Desitin, but I think Boudreax’s Butt Paste is an awesome non-cloth safe rash cream. It always worked wonders on my daughter (who was disposable diapered.)

Does she know what the rash is? Thrush etc.? My son actually got terrible rashes from disposables, but it cleared up with cloth. If he gets a bit red, I put a thin layer of a cloth safe cream like Grandma El’s, Earth Mama Angel Baby Bottom Balm, or Motherlove Diaper Rash and Thrush Salve, and it clears up.

Once her baby’s rash has cleared up, she might want to consider using a very, very thin layer of cloth safe cream at every change as a barrier.

For now, I’d also recommend letting the baby have some naked time. Do tummy time on a few blankets or a waterproof pad, and leave the diaper off whenever possible. I know it can be a messy prospect, but air does seem to help rashes!

How about you lovely readers?  Have you battled a diaper rash that required medicated cream?

Cloth Diaper Advice – Mailbox Mondays 3/21/11

higher rise #clothdiapers via @chgdiapers

Every Monday, I will answer reader submitted questions, and ask you to add your opinions.

I didn’t receive any submissions this week, but as you all know, I will always answer questions via email.  I thought I’d summarize two emails I received this week, since others may be having the same issues, and see what you all think!

M. has a 6 month old, 22 lb baby who has a pretty high rise.  She was looking for one-size pockets with a high enough rise to cover his crack!  She doesn’t have too many commercial diapers, but did recently win a Best Bottom diaper in a giveaway.

The highest rise diapers I have are the Bumgenius 4.0, Flip, Fuzzibunz Perfect Size Medium and Thirsties Duo Diaper Size 2.

I grabbed a few of my diapers to compare and found that the Bumgenius 4.0 unsnapped is a smidge bigger than the Best Bottom unsnapped, by about an inch.  The BG 4.0 and FB medium are about the same size when stretched, but the FB is actually a smidge bigger when folded.  The Thirsties size 2 is very similar to the Bumgenius.

How about you guys?  Have you found a diaper with a nice, high rise?

A. received a few used diaper covers, but they smelled like smoke.  She did a soak and triple rinsed, but they still smelled smoky.  She was looking for a way to get the smell out without damaging the diapers.

That is definitely something to remember to ask, whether you’re buying used dipes, or from a WAHM.  Is this a smoke free home and do you have any pets (if you have pet allergies.)  That said, it’s something I always forget to ask!!

The two things I thought to try were baking soda or vinegar.  Soak the covers in a tub with water and a generous helping of baking soda, then rinse rinse rinse or do the same with vinegar.  I’ve heard about people using “oxyvin,” or oxyclean and vinegar, to strip really icky diapers.  The oxy clean and vinegar create a chemical reaction (use caution!!) to clean the diapers.

How about you all, have you had to get smoke smell out of diapers?  What worked?

Today, I just want to ask for your advice.  Are you happy with the info I provide here (the site in general?)  Are there features you’d like me to add?

I know everyone likes a good giveaway, but I want the site to be a resource for you, not just a place to get free stuff.

How about the YouTube videos, are you finding them helpful?  Are there videos you’d like me to add to the ChangeDiapers YouTube channel?

I do have a list of diapers I’d still like to review, but since I don’t really “need” any more diapers, it’s hard to justify the budget expenditure!

Are there any diapers you’d like to see me review?  You can check my archive of cloth diaper reviews of course, in case I’ve already done it.  Or, are there diapers you’ve seen reviews of, but you still want more information, close-up photos of specific features, etc.?

Let me know y’all!  (Me pretending to be southern, ha.)
