The amber teething beads are a choking hazard. A child recently choked to death on a Florida day care.

It’s not a good idea to leave necklaces on children during naps, or anytime they aren’t supervised.

Necklaces should either have a breakaway clasp, or the necklace itself should break when pressure is applied (to prevent strangulation). In addition, beads should be individually knotted so that if the necklace breaks, beads aren’t released.

Lastly, the necklace should fit properly with little slack so the child isn’t able to lift it to his/her mouth.

      Supervision is key.

I don’t know whether the child choked or was strangled (nor any details about the necklace) but either way, it’s a tragedy and I’m devastated for the parents.
