Have you been following Baby Oliver’s story? Oliver, born at 25 weeks/1 lb 9 oz, is now 11 weeks old and just broke the 5 lb mark. Doctors are hopeful that he will be able to leave the NICU in a month or so, though he will have frequent doctor visits and potential future surgeries ahead of him. The family has insurance however, it doesn’t cover all costs (bills are arriving daily) or their extra expenses involved with his NICU stay. Amii is spending most of her time about 3 hours away from home so she can be in the NICU with Oliver, and her husband is caring for their older kids and driving back and forth.
Today Amii would have been just about ready to enter her third trimester and the baby should have been hearing muffled laughter in the womb as brother & sister gave their name suggestions, not hearing beeping of NICU machinery. She should have been holding up onesies marveling that the older kids were ever that tiny, not keeping watch over an isolette. Rubbing her belly and wondering who he’d look like, not wondering if he would survive.
Several local moms got together to organize a benefit auction for 1 lb 9 oz micro-preemie Oliver Fritz, son of Up On the Hill owner Amii Fritz. Though the other moms have done the bulk of the hard work, I’ve pitched in a little bit and am excited for the Putting on the Fritz auction, which will begin Saturday, January 24th, 2015.
Amii, owner of Up on the Hill (UOTH), has been my friend since about 1993. She opened UOTH in 2012 when her husband lost his job after their second child was born.
She was surprised to find out they were expecting their third child in mid-April 2015. Unfortunately, baby boy Fritz arrived this morning, January 2, 2015 at 1 lb, 9 oz.
Amii is one of my few close friends and I can’t just stand here, I have to do something!
I set up a GoFundMe for Amii and her family where I will post updates as Amii has them. All funds raised will go to the family to pay day to day expenses. I’d love if Amii was able to hire more help to keep her store running as well. Up On the Hill is my local cloth diaper shop and the first I ever set foot in!
