If you click & buy, I may receive a small commission. I have a business relationship with the manufacturer & received these inserts for free. Microfiber inserts are one of the most affordable cloth diaper inserts there are. That said, they have their downsides, including flattening & losing absorbency over time, being prone to compression leaks and picking up lint like crazy. Worst of all (in my opinion) is the feeling of a new microfiber insert on your hands – I shuddered just thinking about it.
Geffen Baby sent me the new version of their Ultra Absorber Plus (they only synthetic insert they carry) and I could hardly believe it was microfiber.
On top in the picture above is the new version, with the old on the bottom. The old looks like your typical, standard microfiber insert, while the new is a terry loop texture, almost like a luxury towel.
The new insert is soft, flexible, very trim and best of all, it feels smooth under your hands, more like cotton and nothing like what you’d expect from microfiber.
The new insert (right above) is so much trimmer than the old (left above) but it’s actually 4 layers of absorbency vs. 3. In my “unscientific experiments” it initially seems to absorb a bit less than the old version but it holds on to every ounce whereas the old version is prone to compression leaks like any traditional microfiber insert.
These would be great to layer with their hemp inserts (so trim, seriously) or just to refresh a diaper that’s lost its oomph. Like their other absorbers, they are made in the USA!
Since I no longer have a baby in diapers, Katie tested the new inserts and compared them to the old ones. Here’s what she had to say:
“I’ve been comparing the old and new Geffen Baby inserts. Immediately I noticed the new ones feel much nicer than the old ones. They’re both made of the same material, but the new ones feel like bamboo. We’ve been using them in our Flip covers with a fleece liner on top and they’re pretty trim. I was pretty surprised with the absorbency because my little guy can out wet a lot of inserts. But the Geffen Baby held up to his massive amounts of pee. The new version was trim enough that I could use it as a booster for our nighttime prefolds without adding too much bulk. Nighttime toddler pee diapers can be super stinky and sometimes my little guy’s definitely are. It was nice that the Geffen Baby inserts didn’t hold onto the stink like some other materials do. They also dry pretty quickly, which is always a huge plus!”
