Geffen Baby Hemp Prefolds – Review

IMG_3677

“I’m more of a pocket mama than a prefold mama, but I love these!” I’m not the only person saying that, or something like it!

I received a big package of product samples from Geffen Baby before my youngest son was born, and I’ve been working with them ever since. Despite my business relationship with the company, this review is me speaking as a cloth diapering Mama, not a company representative; all opinions are mine!

Geffen Baby 22 prefolds

Geffen Baby prefolds are 60% hemp and 40% organic cotton (the highest hemp content on the market) and are super soft and ultra absorbent. They are available in either hemp jersey (like a soft t-shirt) or hemp fleece (fuzzy.) I did not do my usual pre/post-pre measurement photos because the company has made some changes/improvements since I received these samples 6 months ago.

I loved these on my son as a newborn. He was a super heavy wetter and soaked newborn diapers, but he was too tiny for most one size. The Geffen Baby Orange edge prefolds fit perfectly inside a newborn cover. Hemp can be difficult to snappi due to the nature of the fabric, and I had issues with the snappi popping off the orange, but no issues with the other sizes. They are also great trifolded or just angel wing folded & covered.

The green edge prefolds fit my 5-month old perfectly, with room to grow. They also fit well in a small or medium pocket diaper.

Unlike the orange, the green edge fleece & jersey both gave me no trouble snappi’ing. Hemp has a bit of stretch to it, so it is fantastic for getting a snug fit.

The lavender edge prefolds fit perfectly in large covers or pockets, and fit a wide range of babies. I could almost get one on my older son if I pinned it at the sides, and my younger son will fit in the for a long time; the “wings” meet in the middle now!

I was using a medium superdo in a small Bumgenius 4.0 pocket for my younger son and a large superdo in a large Bumgenius 4.0 pocket for my older son at night. The prefolds do just as well, but are a little trimmer. I can even put a lavender prefold in the small diaper (though it’s a little bulkier) and it has dry areas in the morning!

Below is a medium superdo in a small Bumgenius (black) vs a green edge/small Geffen Baby jersey prefold in a small Bumgenius (red) as well as a large Superdo in a large Bumgenius (mirror/blue-green) and lavender edge/medium/large Geffen Baby jersey prefold in a large Bumgenius (twilight/dark blue.)

Geffen Baby also makes a navy blue edge prefold that is an XL/toddler size for bigger diapers, covers and large toddlers.

Hemp products do need to be washed & dried at least 3 times before using, and they will continue to gain absorbency through 8-10 washes. Hemp shrinks a good bit, but below are the measurements of the prefolds as they are being made today, before washing. In parenthesis I put the MSRP for jersey & the MSRP for fleece. Prefolds are also serged on all 4 sides now, not 3 like what I pictured.

Orange Edge/XS/Newborn: 12″ x 13.5″ ($5.52/$5.72)
Green Edge/Small: 14.5″ x 16″ ($6.52/$6.72)
Lavender Edge/Medium/Large: 16″ x 18.5″ ($7.52/$7.72)
Navy Edge/XL: 18″ x 21.5″ ($8.52/$8.72)

All prefolds are 4 layers all the way across, forming 12 layers when trifolded. They do not have lines sewn to fold, nor an additional panel in the middle, but I don’t think it’s necessary since they are 4 layers vs. the 2/3/2 that some other hemp prefolds are. If you are looking for a pocket insert for a super heavy wetter, these kept my boys totally dry at night & didn’t have the stink issues that thick microfiber inserts do!

Geffen Baby also makes nursing pads, wipes and universal inserts (I will be posting about them next week!) All of the hemp products are entirely made in the U.S.A., from actually making the fabric, to cutting & sewing. They also have a line of affordable, imported prefolds for those who need an even more economical option.

I love their products so much, I bought them for my May & June top fan prizes!

Geffen Baby hoped that their new website would be up now, but they ran into some unexpected delays. What shows at their URL now is incomplete & a little confusing. However, they have items in-stock and ready to ship! You can email maria at geffenbaby.com for an order form, and pay securely via Paypal. They charge actual shipping, as calculated after your order is packaged. Lovely Eco Chic is a Geffen Baby retailer, and she stocks the jersey prefolds, but is willing & able to get you other products if you like! The company is accepting wholesale applications, so tell your favorite retailer you’d like them to stock Geffen Baby. 🙂

FTC compliance: I received product samples at no cost and I have a business relationship with the manufacturer. I was not asked to write, nor was I compensated for this post, and all opinions are my own.

Hi! I saw your review while trying to do research on geffen baby and have found it really helpful! Question, I am relatively CD new, and am looking for an overnight option for pockets and flips. My girl is small, but a heavy wetter so I’m looking for trim and absorbent. Would you recommend pre-folds (never used them) or the actual diaper inserts?

I prefer the prefolds because they are so easy. Folded in thirds they make 12 layers (inserts are 5 layers each so that’s more than doubling inserts).

    Hi
I just saw this post from 2012, after all the talk of Geffen products for night time I had to do some research. Can you tell me what is the difference between the jersey & the fleece in your experience? I feel like the fleecy might be a good night time option & remain dryer on the skin (i want to use in a flip & not a pocket)? Also sizing, we are 16months & 27lbs do you think i should size up to XL (or would that be WAY too big to fit into a FLIP cover?

    Thanks so much!!!

Hi Jodi! The jersey is like a soft t-shirt while the fleece is fuzzy like the inside of a sweatshirt. The fleece is a little more absorbent and a bit thicker. It bugs me a little bit because it pills (like any fleece tends to) while the jersey wears very well. If you have an INSANELY heavy wetter you could do the XL folded in quarters, but I think for most people the M/L will be enough. Worth noting is that it is hemp fleece & not synthetic fleece, so it won’t have the “stay dry” effect of polyester fleece. I use mine in a pocket,or you could use a fleece liner. The plus of hemp is that it can absorb up to 20% of its weight in moisture and still feel dry to the touch! Hope that helps!

        Hi Maria
Thanks so much for the quick reply. I definitively want to try this brand. I’ve seen some websites only have the jersey option… in your opinion is the difference in absorbency enough to choose the “fleece” vs the jersey which sounds like it lasts longer. I definitively need a night time solution and can find a pocket to use or purchase a separate stay dry doubler to place against the skin if i continue w. Flips at night. They are just a little pricey so i don’t want to buy a bunch of different ones to “test” i’d rather just purchase the best option the 1st time 🙂
        thanks again!! super helpful

Some people love the fleece, but I really like the jersey, and it’s plenty absorbent for us. It’s a tough choice, but I say try a jersey (I think Abby’s Lane has them – free shipping) and see what you think! They are a little spendy but I spent an awful lot on fitteds and wool and other “night time” inserts before I found these.

What are the measurements after shrinking?

The fleece shrinks a bit less than the jersey. Was there a size in particular you wanted me to measure? I’ll get my prefolds & my measuring tape out. 🙂

Are the fleece and jersey cotton equally stretchy? Do any of these have poly in them?

Hmm…I think the jersey might be a little stretchier. There is no poly at all, it is 60% hemp and 40% organic cotton.

Do you have a favorite between the jersey and the fleece?

Just my preference, but I like the jersey. It is a bit trimmer than the fleece, and the fleece does get a bit pilly over time. However, the fleece tends to shrink a bit less and be a little more absorbent, so there’s that to consider too!
