Oh no, another week with no mailbox Mondays submissions!  If you have a questions for me, cloth diaper related or not (just be nice!) send an email to maria at change-diapers.com with “Mailbox Mondays” in the subject.

So this week, I thought I’d share some of the most head scratching search terms that led people to my site in the past month.

1. “i had to get a spell made diaper”

Uh, what?  What kind of spell?  Does this spell make the diaper change/wash itself?  If so, where can I get one?

2. “how did a diaper get in my daughter’s room”

I have no idea, but now I want to know too!

3. “i like diapers”

Yeah me too!  I love cloth diapers anyway!

4. “i love boys in fitteds”

I don’t understand this at all.  When I think “fitteds” I think fitted diapers of course.  I guess it could be fitted hats?

5. “my mom change my diapers”

Ermmm…if you’re old enough to be googling, I would hope not.

6. “weird pocket diaper”

I can’t let this one go.  What was it?  What made it weird?  I have to know!  LOL

By the way, I copied this right from my analytics, I captialize “I” even when I’m searching, ha ha.

Have you ever searched for anything that would seem weird out of context?

Maria,

I’m using cloth wipes full time now, and am wondering if you have any suggestions on where to put them for ease of use and if you use a solution? Right now my wipes are by the bathroom sink where I can get one wet when I need to change someone. It doesn’t work to have them on the changing table (top of the dresser with pad) due to lack of space, boys kicking them off the dresser, etc. I’m always trying to think of different places to do/put things to make it easier. Thanks so much!

~Sara

I think that cloth wipes are a must have when you cloth diaper!  When I first switched, I was using up some disposable wipes I had, and what a pain to remember to pick them out and throw them away.

I change most of my son’s diapers downstairs in the family room, so I just keep diapers, wipes and solution on a ledge by the couch.

The wipes are just in a stack, nothing fancy, but you can also fold them to pop up in a wipes container.  I made a quick video if you aren’t familiar with how to do it:

Upstairs, I have just a few diapers and a handful of wipes (plus solution) in a drawer.  It’s rather messy, I just have them stuffed in where I keep nail clippers, comb etc.

If you don’t have drawer space, and you don’t have space on your dresser/changing table, I love the idea of a small shelf mounted on the wall, right above the dresser/changing table.  You can get inexpensive ones that are very basic but do the job, or you can get stylish, decorative ones that match your decor.  A small shelf just big enough for a few diapers, wipes and solution can be used later to store knick knacks, keepsakes, stuffed animals or decorations.

Speaking of solutions, I really liked the Thirsties booty luster I reviewed, but I’m cheap frugal, so I’m just reusing the bottle right now.  I’ve used booty cubes, Ruby Moon Wipes Bits and Lil Outlaws Rump Solution as well.  I use mine in a spray bottle, so my lasts seemingly forever.  I’ve used a booty cubes sample pack, I still have some Ruby moon bits left, and I’ve barely made a dent in a single pack of Lil Outlaws bits, so it’s very cost effective for me.

I spray directly on my son, then wipe, so I use very little.  Now that it’s gotten cold again, I’ve been spraying the wipes, which takes more solution to get the job done.  The cold spray didn’t bother him last year, but it seems to this year!  If you make the solution and pour it over your wipes, you will of course need more.

I have seen some amazing setups where people have this beautiful, neatly organized shelf with all of their diapers, covers, prefolds and so forth arranged just so.  For me, the best setup/storage is out of reach of my kids!

How about you?  How do you store your stuff?

Naomi says:

Hey Maria,

Talk to me(us) about hemp vs. bamboo. Any recommendations of brands for a hemp or bamboo insert?

Overnight diapers for my 3 year old are getting pretty bulky. I usually sandwich a terry hemp doubler between two microfiber inserts in a generic pocket. That usually does the trick, but I’ve only got two of the hemp guys and when I’m out, I stuff the poor pockets to the gills with microfiber (3 inserts or 2 inserts with a mf towel). While dd doesn’t seem to care about the bulk, it gets hard to stuff and when family sees her overnight diaper it is pretty comical.

I don’t mind bulk, but am wondering which material to try and get inserts of. I’ve heard a lot about wool covers, but right now can only afford to stay with my pockets for overnight and just get a couple used inserts.

Great question!  I’ve been fortunate in that several of the diapers I’ve purchased/reviewed came with natural fiber inserts, and they are definitely top notch for nighttime diapering.

natural fiber inserts

babykicks hemp insert babykicks

In no particular order, first is the insert that came with my Babykicks Bumboo Pocket Diaper.  This is 55% hemp and 45% cotton.  Babykicks also sells Joey Bunz, Joey Bunz Premium (both sized) and doublers separately.  (There should be some in the CSN giveaway in the Merry Fluffy Christmas event!)

amp insert

My Amp Duo Diaper came with a 2-layer hemp insert, as well as a bamboo insert.  The inserts look like a smallish prefold that you trifold, and they also come in 3-layer hemp, as well as organic cotton.

blueberry hemp microfiber insert

My Blueberry Minky was one I bought after only cloth diapering for about a month, and it was my first experience with a microfiber/hemp combo.  It’s a one size insert that snaps down to different sizes, and a 3-pack retails separately for $19.95.

cotton hemp doublers

These doublers were kind of random.  They were loose in the package with the Blueberry diapers I bought last year.  I believe they are organic cotton and bamboo doublers but I’m not entirely sure.  I use both of them at night.  I have 4 night time diapers in my rotation right now.  My Guerilla Fluff Utilitarian with a Mobums Wool Interlock Night Night Soaker, a Dypes by Dixon Sweet Slumber fleece pocket stuffed with the superdo, and two Bumgenius 3.0 pockets, one stuffed with a microfiber insert and one of the random hemp/cotton doublers, the other stuffed with the loopydo with the second random doubler in between.

loopydo insert

Speaking of which, I wholeheartedly recommend the Knickernappies Superdo and Loopydo inserts.  I purchased these out of utter desperation when my son was soaking every insert I had, and I was creating a monster leg gap by putting 3 inserts in a pocket.  They really are rather pricey at $7.50 for a loopydo and $12.95 for a superdo, but I think they are worth it.  I tried to be cheap and buy the large size for my son’s medium diapers, but they are quite bulky folded over.  I love the microfiber/hemp combo because the microfiber whisks the moisture away from my son’s skin, and the hemp locks it away.

OK, I feel like a paper towel commercial.  Really though, if you are looking for a solution for a heavy wetter, I highly recommend them.  The only problem I have with them is that they can become quite stinky.  When I notice that, I wash (inserts only) with about 1/4 cup of bleach, then rinse rinse rinse until the water is clean and the inserts don’t smell like bleach anymore!

If I had the money to spend, I’d love to have more superdo/loopydo inserts.  I’ve been wanting to buy some mediums for a while but I’ve been trying to stick to the budget!

These are just the inserts I own, there are of course lots of other natural fiber inserts/prefolds out there!

So how about the rest of you?  Do you have a favorite natural fiber insert?

Courtney says:

Hello Maria!

I have a diaper cleaning question. Our diaper sprayer recently broke. Until we can build a new one, I need to find a new way to clean poopy diapers. What is your method? Do you have any pointers? My son is 11 months old, so there is no way we can throw them in the wash without rinsing first!

Thanks!
Courtney

I never got around to buying a diaper sprayer, so I’m all too familiar with this conundrum.  When my son first started solids, I was able to get away with just throwing them right into the wash.  If they needed a little extra help (still mostly breastmilk poop) I was rinsing them with my laundry room/utility sink sprayer.  Then for a few months there, I was able to flip the poop right into the potty.  Boy was that nice!

Now here’s where this question gets a little gross.  I apologize in advance, there’s just no way to avoid a little grossness with this subject!  He went through the stage of the “peanut butter” consistency poop, and now that he’s eating tons of fruit and drinking some juice, diapers are much more messy and I can’t just flip solids off the diaper.

What I do is use 3 or 4 sheets of toilet paper folded up to scrape off as much as I can, then whatever is left goes into the washing machine.  I’ve heard of several other similar methods, where people may use a clean popsicle stick or plastic card (great use for the old Blockbuster card if you still have one!) to scrape the diaper.  Just keep it in a plastic bag out of sight, perhaps behind the toilet, or under your tissue box if you keep one on top of the tank like I do.

Some people still do the ol’ dunk and swish in the toilet, I’ve even heard of people flushing with the diaper in the toilet (hold on to it tightly!) to take advantage of the self-swish.

I’ve heard more than a few say they just rinse the diapers in the sink or the bathtub (a hand held shower head would be especially handy) and then wiping out the tub/sink with bleach etc.  This would be a pain if you have a frequent pooper, but might be handy if you have a child who poops like clockwork once per day.

How about the rest of you?  Do you use a diaper sprayer?  If not, how you handle the poop?

{{tumbleweeds and spooky abandoned ghost town noises}}
Well, since I didn’t get a single Mailbox Mondays submission for this week, I’m going to ask you a question instead.
{{crickets chirping}}
OK, here goes.  Has anyone noticed a color difference between the tabs on their bumgenius 4.0 compared to the body of the diaper?
Bumgenius 4.0 Tabs
I didn’t notice this with my 3.0s, or my “sweet” or “grasshopper” 4.0.  So, I was wondering if this is just how they are, if I got one with two different dye lots, or if maybe I received a “second” since this was a replacement of a 3.0 under warranty.
Anyone?  I know it doesn’t matter but it bugs me darn it!!
