I purchased the one-size diapers myself. I was not compensated, nor was I asked to write this post, and all opinions are my own. Post contains affiliate links. I was really anxious to try the new Thirsties one-size diapers since the duo diapers were one of my favorites. I’ll compare the new one-size diaper to the duo, then follow with my usual “review.” I’m also giving away two diapers in a self-spnsored giveaway so read on!
The one-size diaper is available in your choice of snaps, or the new style hook & loop.
The snap configuration has been improved with two rows of snaps. When the new diaper was announced I was initially unsure of what they meant. The only snap duo diaper I’m using was hook & loop converted to snaps, so it has the same snap configuration as the new one-size. It wasn’t until I pulled out my size 1 duo diapers that it dawned on me. I was so confused, ha.
Another change is that there is no longer belly elastic. Some people might be sad about that but I wasn’t, I was quite pleased. I never really cared for it and feel I get a better fit with diapers that don’t have it.
The old size 2 duo diaper was estimated to fit 15-40 pounds. I started using it on my boys when they were between the small & medium setting of one-size diapers (if I remember correctly, they were a bit under 15 lbs) and it fit my son through potty training, with room to grow. The one-size diaper seems to have exactly the same body as the size 2 duo, less the front elastic. It is just as long and wide, has the front & rear pocket openings and leg gussets. However, in addition to the improved hook and loop or snaps, it has a slightly different rise snap configuration to fit babies from 8-40 pounds.
The old inserts were either size 1 or size 2, with a 5 layer 55% hemp/45% organic cotton insert, snapped to a 2 layer microfiber insert. I love the 1-2 punch of microfiber & hemp, to absorb quickly and also absorb a lot. This is a big reason why the duo diaper has always been a nap/car ride diaper for us, and was one of my favorites for my newborn, tiny heavy wetter. The new insert has a full-size 5 layer 55% hemp/45% organic cotton insert, along with a 3 layer newborn microfiber insert. They snap together the same way the duo did however, there’s an additional snap to fold it down to fit in the smaller rise settings.
Here they are after prep – size 2 on the left and one-size on the right. Hemp pieces in the left photo, microfiber in the right and together below:
The smallest setting of the one-size doesn’t get as small as the size 1, which was estimated to fit babies from 6-18 pounds.
However, the duo line is still available in the duo AIO, duo fab fitted and duo wrap. I loved the size 1 duo pocket beauase it was super easy, fit tiny babies and was very absorbent. Though I was initially sad about the discontinuation of the size 1, it doesn’t really matter since I’m finished with babies! If I were to be blessed with another newborn, I’d buy some of the size 1 duo AIOs along with hemp doublers to tuck under. They don’t have the double gussets and their size/cut is more similar to the duo fab fitted, but they are still nice. (They’d be even better with a cord snap down!)
The smallest setting of the one-size is definitely smaller than the duo size 2, and would certainly fit sooner.
The medium setting is also a bit smaller.
As I said earlier, the body of the diaper itself (less the closure & rise snaps) seems to be identical to the size 2 duo. If you stretch the elastic of the duo, the front panel is the same size. The new diaper comes with a slightly higher MSRP of $20.75 vs. $18.50 for solids and $19.50 for prints in the duo. The one-size also comes in the extended color line announced with the hook & loop improvements, including the beautiful aqua color I chose.
I am very happy with the changes! That concludes my comparisons, now I’ll continue with the usual review photos!
The one-size diaper fits 8-40 pounds with 3 rise settings. Choose from hook & loop or snap closures.
The diaper has double gussets, a stay-dry inner, and both front and rear pocket openings. This sleeve style allows the inserts to agitate out in the wash.
The 2-piece insert combines a full size hemp/organic cotton piece and a small microfiber piece, which both snap together, and snap smaller.
Here is the small rise setting measured folded & stretched:

Here my son is 2 years old and about 23 pounds in the medium setting of the size 2 duo:
I will never win any awards for “best action shot” – my action shots are very real, LOL. Yes off kilter closures, peekie cheekie and all. Such is life with a 2 year old you have to chase & throw your leg over to diaper, ha.
2 years, 23 lbs, medium setting of the one-size diaper:
I love the fit on him!
