I’ve been cloth diapering my baby girl since she left the hospital 9 months ago. I love using cloth and have never considered anything else. I’ve overcome any problem we’ve run into and it’s been going great! I’ve traveled with my diapers with no problem, but I’ve always had access to laundry facilities. Which leads me to my questions….

We’re taking a family vacation to Mexico in July (yippie!!). I will definitely be taking my diapers with me, but I will not have access to laundry machines. How do you handwash a load of diapers? I have no problem doing it and am kind of excited for the challenge. I feel like if I can do full-time cloth in Mexico for a week then how could anyone resist considering it? My plan so far is to use my regular pockets and A12s with flushable liners in every change to address the solids. But where do I go from there? Can I use my Rockin’ Green that I love so much? How do I make sure they’re going to be clean? (I should note that I don’t want to use disposable inserts). I’m assuming there will be a bathtub (will double-check with the resort before we leave) and line drying will be easy from our balcony.

I’ve read that handwashing flats is very easy to do and that they dry quickly (that would really help as opposed to the thick microfiber/A12 inserts). So should I reconsider my plan and get flats with some covers instead? Can I just lay the flats inside the cover or do I have to fold and use a Snappi to prevent leaks?

Oh wow, how exciting! I think it’s awesome that you will be cloth diapering on your trip! In my opinion, microfiber is the most difficult thing to get clean, and it might be a chore to try to get them clean with handwashing.

Flats are definitely easier to wash and quicker to dry since they unfold, rather than being sewn as thick layers. You can get a dozen cotton flats for as little as $20 (although hemp is much more, and some brands are more expensive than others.) They can also be very useful around the house when you’ve finished diapering with them. Buying flats really wouldn’t cost much more than buying a week’s worth of chemical free disposable diapers/liners (which I know you don’t want to do anyway) plus you can reuse them

They are a little more time consuming to use, since you have to fold them. Just like a prefold, you can snappi them for a more secure fit, or just fold and trifold them, then lay them in a cover. You can generally use AI2 shells as covers, it will just be more of a tight squeeze over bulky diapers. You can even use pocket diaper shells as covers, airing them out between uses to get two or so changes out of each one.

As far as hand washing, I would plan to use the detergent you currently use and wash in the bathtub, replicating your current wash routine.

Submerse the diapers in cold or warm water for a soak, swish them around a bit, then rinse (may not really be necessary if you are using liners.) Then fill the tub with hot water, add your detergent (swish to dissolve completely) and add the diapers. Let them soak, agitating every so often. Then drain the water and rinse. It might be good idea to submerse the diapers an additional time with clean water, to make sure the diapers are rinsed clean.

Sprout Change Cloth Diaper Review

The Willow Store sent me a Sprout Change cloth diapering system to try. I’ve heard quite a bit about them, and was very intrigued by their one-size, reversible all-in-two system, with a unique size adjustment.

I received a “string bean” shell, which is an adorable bright blue on one side, and bright green on the other. Sprout Change has tons of options for the absorbent inserts.

I received two of the organic inserts, but they also have stay dry inserts, organic hemp prefolds, even organic or microfleece “soft sleeves,” so you can use extra microfiber inserts you have!

I love that the packaging includes the sizing instructions and guidelines!

The diaper is side snapping, but all of the size adjustments are made through hidden elastic inside the diaper.

The leg elastic is adjusted through a small opening located on the front of the diaper.

The waist elastic is adjusted through a snapped opening at the wing. This means that not only is the front of the diaper less bulky, but this is a very Daddy or babysitter friendly diaper, even for those who prefer Velcro. One you’ve adjusted the size, you’re set. There’s no figuring out which snap to use!

The 5 sizes are newborn (5-10 lbs), infant (10-18 lbs), crawler (15-22 lbs), walker (22-34 lbs) & potty (34+ lbs). I think you could also call these XS, S, M, L & XL. The packaging has recommended settings for each size. To keep things simple, I’ve taken photos of each size measured folded and stretched, set on the same setting for waist & legs (4th, 3rd, 2nd, 1st and 0.)

Here is the Newborn/XS setting, 4th button hole for each leg, 4th on one side of the waist and 3rd on the other (couldn’t quite get it tight enough to do on both sides!)

When the diaper is “right side out,” the front of the diaper snaps to the wings, like a traditional side snapping diaper. When you reverse it, it still snaps on the side (vs the front) but the back of the diaper comes around to snap on the front panel of the diaper. It sounds complex, but it’s really quite simple. I was wondering how it would work!

I figured my 22 ish pound, 22 month old son would fit well in the walker setting. I knew the organic inserts would shrink when I prepped them. Initially, they were quite large!

After prepping, the inserts fit wonderfully in the walker size, without needing to fold them.

I probably could adjust the size even a little bit more; the beauty is that just taking a few minutes to get just the right fit, makes diaper changes super easy until you need to size up!

The diaper looked adorable, but also performed very well. The inserts are super absorbent, fit well with no shifting or leaking, and are very easy to use.

It was very easy to remove the wet insert, and reuse the shell, reversed for a change of pace!

Now I understand why people like Sprout Change so much! Shells retail for $16.95 separately, Stay Dry inserts are $4.75 and organic inserts are $5.75. You can save more by buying insert 6-packs or diaper packages/bundles!

Cloth Diaper Advice – Mailbox Mondays 3/28/11 – Diaper Rash/Creams

Hey Maria,

I have a friend with a newborn who has horrible diaper rash (even in sposies) and has to have medicated diaper cream and A and D ointment on her bottom (the doc wants only the A and D to come off with diaper changes, so the medicated stays on all the time). I suggested fleece liners, but wondered (1) if you have any other suggestions and (2) if you know of any diaper cream that is as thick as Desitin, but is CD safe.

Hi Madeline. Even “cloth safe” creams have to be put on very, very thin in order to not damage the diapers. If she had to use a medicated cream, I’d recommend using a fleece liner for sure. You’re really not going to find anything that thick or medicated that is cloth safe. I never had luck with Desitin, but I think Boudreax’s Butt Paste is an awesome non-cloth safe rash cream. It always worked wonders on my daughter (who was disposable diapered.)

Does she know what the rash is? Thrush etc.? My son actually got terrible rashes from disposables, but it cleared up with cloth. If he gets a bit red, I put a thin layer of a cloth safe cream like Grandma El’s, Earth Mama Angel Baby Bottom Balm, or Motherlove Diaper Rash and Thrush Salve, and it clears up.

Once her baby’s rash has cleared up, she might want to consider using a very, very thin layer of cloth safe cream at every change as a barrier.

For now, I’d also recommend letting the baby have some naked time. Do tummy time on a few blankets or a waterproof pad, and leave the diaper off whenever possible. I know it can be a messy prospect, but air does seem to help rashes!
