Happy Heiny New Style One Size Cloth Diaper Review / Comparison to Old Style & Discount

New Style Happy Heinys 1

My Happy Heiny Monkey Print and Peace Bear print diapers were some of the first in my stash. Within a few months, I figured out that they really didn’t fit my slender son well. By the way, yes I know my “reviews” were terrible when I first started!

New Style Happy Heinys 2New Style Happy Heinys 3 back

Happy Heiny now has an improved style that better fits average to slender babies! You can still get the original style if you love them, but they are made to order. The Happy Heiny Store has several discontinued colors available, that are discounted $6.00 below the $18.95 MSRP (burgundy, candy, forest green, hot pink, light pink, peach & purple.) Get one without an insert and save another $2.00. I was able to get this purple diaper for just $10.95, less an additional discount (I have one for you too!) So, if you like one of the discontinued colors and you have a spare insert, you can get these for less than $10 each!

New Style Happy Heinys 4 snap closuresNew Style Happy Heinys 5 snap overlap

The other thing I wasn’t thrilled about with my old Happy Heinys was the Velcro closures/laundry tabs. The diaper I got this time has snap closures, with overlap. You can also get the new style with velcro closures, and the same colors are available at the discounted price!

New Style Happy Heinys 6 4 rise settings

The diaper has 4 rise settings, and is estimated to fit up to 35 pounds. Happy Heiny calls the sizes newborn, small, medium and large, but I tend to refer to them as small, medium, large and extra large, as it does run a wee bit big. I have reviews coming up for the XS pocket and the mini one size as well, and they are far more likely to fit a newborn than this, in my opinion.

The new style still has the same leg elastic and pocket opening.

New Style Happy Heinys 11 new vs oldNew Style Happy Heinys 12 new vs old
New Style Happy Heinys 13 new vs old

Overall, nothing jumps out at me as being different.

Here I’ve compared each size, folded and stretched. The purple snap diaper is the “new” style and the peace bears Velcro closure is the “old” style.

Smallest size setting:

New Style Happy Heinys 14 new small foldedNew Style Happy Heinys 15 old small folded
New Style Happy Heinys 16 new small stretchedNew Style Happy Heinys 17 old small stretched
New Style Happy Heinys 18 new vs old small

Second to smallest setting:

New Style Happy Heinys 19 new medium foldedNew Style Happy Heinys 20 old medium folded
New Style Happy Heinys 21 new medium stretchedNew Style Happy Heinys 22 old medium stretched
New Style Happy Heinys 23 new vs old medium

Third/next to largest setting:

New Style Happy Heinys 24 new large foldedNew Style Happy Heinys 25 old large folded
New Style Happy Heinys 26 new large stretchedNew Style Happy Heinys 27 old large stretched
New Style Happy Heinys 28 new vs old large

Fourth/largest setting:

New Style Happy Heinys 29 new xl foldedNew Style Happy Heinys 30 old xl folded
New Style Happy Heinys 31 new xl stretchedNew Style Happy Heinys 32 old xl stretched
New Style Happy Heinys 33 new vs old xl

The larger settings are most noticeably smaller, and the new style definitely fits my 24ish pound 25 month old better.

Here he is in the next-to-largest setting of both:

New Style Happy Heinys 34 old large on 24lb 2yoNew Style Happy Heinys 35 old back
New Style Happy Heinys 36 old sideNew Style Happy Heinys 37 old front

New Style Happy Heinys 38 new large on 24lb 2yoNew Style Happy Heinys 39 new large side
New Style Happy Heinys 40 new large backNew Style Happy Heinys 41 new large back

Most importantly, we’re not experiencing any of the leak issues we had with the old style, even when he “napped” (and by “napped” I mean fell asleep face down on the floor of my office because he refuses to take real naps!)

All In One Diapers Cloth Diapers Giveaway Made in the USA Newborn Diapers Review Velcro/Aplix Closure

Smartipants Little Smarti Newborn Cloth Diaper Review & Giveaway (CLOSED 7/12)

Smartipants Little Smarti Diaper 1

My Smartipants cloth diaper was one of the first diapers in my stash. I bought it in December 2009 when I had only been cloth diapering for about two months. After 8 months in use, it turned out to be one of my favorites!

Smartipants Little Smarti Diaper 2 packaging

I’ve been curious about the “Little Smarti” Newborn Cloth Diaper since they came out. Made by Smartipants, but newborn size, all-in-one style, and Velcro closures. I was a little surprised though that a single Little Smarti retails for $17.95, vs $14.95 for a one size smart sleeve diaper. I generally expect newborn diapers to be less expensive than their one-size counterparts.

Smartipants Little Smarti Diaper 3 sideSmartipants Little Smarti Diaper 4 back

While the smart sleeve diapers come in over a dozen colors, the newborn diapers come only in “think pink”, “aqua breeze” and “bright white.” I thought the aqua was a pretty color, and also suits a boy or a girl (not that it really matters, they’re diapers after all.) I would love to see some more gender neutral color options though!

Smartipants Little Smarti Diaper 5 Velcro closures

Though the Smartipants snap closures are pretty simple as far as snaps go, I love that the newborn diaper has Velcro closures. They are incredibly easy to use and the laundry tabs held tight during my initial wash.

Smartipants Little Smarti Diaper 6 leg elasticSmartipants Little Smarti Diaper 8 sewn in soaker

The Little Smarti has leg and rear elastic, as well as a sewn in (all in one) microfiber soaker under the stay-dry inner.

While the one-size Smartipants diaper fits babies approximately 7-35 pounds, the Little Smarti fits 5-12 pounds, and fills that gap between birth, and when most one-size diapers start to fit.

Here is is compared to the Smartipants O/S diaper on the smallest setting:

As usual, here is my newborn model, pictured also in newborn and size 1 disposable diapers, so you can compare:

Finally, here he is in the Little Smarti:

Smartipants Little Smarti Diaper 19 frontSmartipants Little Smarti Diaper 20 back

Of course, I haven’t gotten to try the diaper on a newborn for fit and absorbency, but this diaper is the same great quality I know from my Smartipants O/S, and I expect it to perform as great as it looks. I do wish these diapers were a little less expensive, and came in a few more colors! See this on my newborn.

All In One Diapers All In Two Diapers Cloth Diapers Giveaway Made in the USA Natural Fiber Retailers Review Side Snapping Snap Closure

Bottombumpers One-Size AIO from Mom’s Milk Boutique Review & Giveaway (CLOSED 6/28)

Bottombumpers Cloth Diaper 1

I first heard of Mom’s Milk Boutique shortly after starting my cloth diapering journey. Of course, they have lots of cloth diapers, but they also sell tons of accessories (wipes, solutions, creams, detergents, dryer balls etc.), carriers, wraps, nursing accessories, skin care, Haba toys and so much more! U.S. orders over $25 get free shipping every day and they use eco-friendly EcoEnclose polymailers. They have a gift registry, affiliate program and a brick & mortar store for those of you in Southern Illinois. (Please note that while I have an affiliate link to Mom’s Milk Boutique on my affiliates page, links within this post are not of the affiliate variety!)

Bottombumpers Cloth Diaper 2 side

Mom’s Milk Boutique sent me a Bottombumpers one-size all-in-one cloth diaper to try. I received the buttercup color, but they also have colors like black, cherry, pumpkin, espresso, and a gorgeous cobalt blue (among others!) The one-size diapers retail for $22.95 and the limited edition prints are $2.00 more.

The package included a Bottombumpers business card, which had handy washing instructions right there.

They have gentle, but effective leg elastic, and a soft inner lining.

Bottombumpers Cloth Diaper 8 elastic

The Bottombumpers is a really trim one-size diaper, thanks in part to the side snap closures (which also makes them nice to use in the early stages of potty training.)

Bottombumpers Cloth Diaper 7 side snapping

What makes them far trimmer than other one-size diapers (in my opinion) is the unique size adjustment, which is inside the rear of the diaper, under the soaker. To picture what you’re looking at, the elastic you see at the top of the photo is the rear elastic of the diaper.

Bottombumpers Cloth Diaper 9 rise adjustment is inside

The soaker has two parts (better cleaning & quicker drying) that are 2 layers of organic cotton each, and it’s topped with 2 layers of super-soft bamboo velour (6 layers of absorbency total.) The soaker snaps to the white snaps in the rear of the diaper, so it covers any unused size adjustment snaps.

Bottombumpers Cloth Diaper 10 soaker snaps to whiteBottombumpers Cloth Diaper 12 reverse of 2 layer soaker
Bottombumpers Cloth Diaper 11 super soft soaker

On a side note, I consider this an all-in-two (AI2) since it has a snap in soaker (Bottombumpers recommends removing the soaker for laundering.) However, some people consider a diaper an AI2 only if the shell is reusable. You will see this style marketed & sold as both an AIO and an AI2, it depends on the company. I don’t think it matters what they call it, as long as you know what you’re getting. I was mighty confused the first time I received an “all-in-one” that looked like this. As a cloth diaper newbie, I had only seen AIOs with sewn in soakers and AI2s (or fitteds) with snap in soakers!

There are 4 size adjustments. The top (white) snap is what the soaker snaps to. The green snap is the male snap used to adjust the size. The blue snap is newborn/small which fits about 8-15 pounds. The orange snap is small-medium or 12-20 pounds, yellow is medium/large or 16-28 pounds (the size my 23 pound 2 year-old is using) and unsnapped is large/x-large for 25+ pounds.

I’ve measured each setting folded and stretched, but as always, it’s not an exact science! 🙂

I did notice that the difference between sizes is a little more subtle than some other diapers. Here are the sizing snaps on the Bottombumpers compared to another brand with 4 rise snaps, so you can see that they are a bit closer together:

Bottombumpers Cloth Diaper 29 not tons of space btwn size settingsBottombumpers Cloth Diaper 30 compared to another 4 setting os diaper

I put my 23 pound, 2 year old son in the medium/large setting. This seemed to be a great fit for him. He still wears a lot of mediums, but I’ve had to move him up to some larges, just in the past few weeks.

He has lots of room to grow, and I think he could probably fit in the small/medium setting as well!

To make a long story short, this diaper was on my son the other day, while Daddy was on diaper duty (I took a blissful solo trip to the grocery store!) I typically change him every 2-2 1/2 hours (or sooner) but this ended up on him far longer than that! It is very absorbent and we didn’t experience any leaks!

Mom’s Milk Boutique also has Bottombumpers Sized Side snapping AIOs and Bottombumpers Sized Hook & Loop Closure AIOs

Cloth Diapers Diaper Covers Made in the USA Retailers Review Wool

Sustainablebabyish Knit Underwoolies – Wool Cloth Diaper Cover Review

sustainable babyish wool 1 tags

I don’t enter many giveaways anymore, so it’s not surprising that I don’t often win! I do enter giveaways that are easy to enter, don’t have a ton of entries, and of course it has to be something I want to win!

Most recently, I entered to win Sustainablebabyish knit underwoolies (a wool cloth diaper cover) from Merrimack Valley Diapers and the Cloth Diaper Retailer Cooperative. I don’t have a lot of wool since it is rather pricey (and I was initially afraid of wool!) but I do have a Kissaluvs Kissa’s Wool Lover Diaper Cover, a Mobums Wool Interlock Night Night Wool Soaker and a Little Beetle Little to Big Wool Cover. Wool is much easier to use and wash than I thought, and it was our savior for night time when my son was in a super heavy wetting stage!

I’ve been eyeing Sustainablebabyish (A.K.A. sbish) since the Great Cloth Diaper Hunt, when I spent hours and hours on their site looking for that darn diaper, LOL!

Imagine how stoked I was when I won!! Especially since wool is expensive! The underwoolies retail for $34.00, so this was an awesome, generous prize from Merrimack Valley Diapers. (They have a note on their home page that they’re going out of business, which is stinky, but you might be able to catch some good sales!)

sustainable babyish wool 2 wildflower seed papersustainable babyish wool 3 sz 1 cute tags

The Sustainablebabyish tag is made out of wildflower paper that you can plant, how cool! There was no real “packaging” to speak of, but I really like their tags.

sustainable babyish wool 4 sz 1 lengthsustainable babyish wool 5
sustainable babyish wool 6 waistsustainable babyish wool 7 leg opening

The underwoolies come in size 1 (5-18 lbs) and 2 (18-37 lbs.) Since it was free, and my son doesn’t really need anything, I chose the size 1 for someday newborn diapering. I think it may have just barely squeezed on my 23 pound son, but not over a fluffy fitted!

sustainable babyish wool 8 inside seams

The craftsmanship is amazing (inside out above to show the seams) and it’s such a simple, but gorgeous cover. I haven’t gotten to really use & review it, but I don’t doubt that it will perform as well as the other wool I have! Of course now I want to try a Sustainablebabyish fitted to go with it! 🙂

All In One Diapers Cloth Diapers Giveaway Large/Special Needs Diapers Made in the USA Pocket Diapers Review Sized Diapers Snap Closure Training Pants

Kissaluvs Kissa’s Pocket Training Pants Review

Kissaluvs Training Pants 1

The last mystery product from Kissaluvs is training pants, as readers had guessed!

Kissaluvs Training Pants 2 backKissaluvs Training Pants 3 side

They will be available in a 2T (20-32 lbs) and a 3T (28-40 lbs.)

Kissaluvs Training Pants 4 snap closures

They have two snap settings on each side and are easy to pull up and down without unsnapping.

Kissaluvs Training Pants 5 inner

The inner is what made me say “oohhhhh!!” when I opened the package. The dinos are so darn cute!! The inner is 100% cotton flannel, so a toddler will feel the wetness of an accident.

Kissaluvs Training Pants 6 pocket

The Kissa’s training pants are pocket trainers, so you can stuff them to customize the absorbency.

Kissaluvs Training Pants 7 sewn in soaker

The training pant has a 2-layer microfiber insert sewn in, so it can be used as is (this is the trainer pictured inside out.)

Kissaluvs Training Pants 8 with microfiber insert

The trainer is quite trim and a little narrow through the crotch, but I was able to stuff a narrower full-size insert in the pocket.

Kissaluvs Training Pants 9 2t vs large marvels aioKissaluvs Training Pants 10 2t vs large marvels aio

Above is the 2T trainer I received, compared to the Kissaluvs Marvels AIO on the large setting. My son is 2 years old and 23 pounds and still wears the medium setting of the Marvels AIO and other one-size diapers, so he could really use a bit smaller size in the trainer.

Kissaluvs Training Pants 11 on 23 lb babyKissaluvs Training Pants 12 2t side on baby

The 2T trainer was really easy to pull on and seemed to fit well, but for a great fit, we’d need it to be a little more snug at the legs (he ended up sagging a bit.) My son is rather unusual though; he is just now on the growth charts at 2 years old, and still wears mostly 24 month clothing.

Kissaluvs Training Pants 13 2t back on baby

The trainers will be available in lagoon blue, chocolate (what I reviewed) or gold with the dino inner, and white with a cycle print inner. They will be available starting June 15th with an MSRP of $14.95, but they will have an introductory price of just $12.95 until the end of June!

I’d say the sewn in soaker is enough to catch an accident, but you’d need to add an insert to hold more than that. I think they are really a great value since they are available in larger sizes and can be used as a pocket diaper or trainer. You can buy them for a baby who is perhaps on the cusp of learning to use the potty and use them as a pocket diaper first, a trainer later. This is especially great since there aren’t that many diapers available to fit kids who outgrow large cloth diapers. Of course, I haven’t seen/measured a 3T but since the 2T is about the same size as a large diaper, I think it’s safe to assume the 3T is larger. 🙂 2013 update: See the 3T & both on my 4.5 year old in my updated Kissaluvs trainers review.
