Katie says:

Hi Maria! I have a few diapers I’m considering donating. I got them for free so I should donate them, rather than sell them, but I don’t know where to start. Do you have any experience with donating diapers or know of a good route to go through? Thanks!

Sincerely,
Katie

Hi Katie! The only “official” way I have donated cloth diapers was to The Cloth Diaper Foundation (formerly Miracle Diapers.) They have been going through a move and complete reorganization and have hit some bumps with the IRS and non-profit status. As far as I know, their site is down and they are not accepting donations at the moment.

Giving Diapers, Giving Hope is another cloth diaper lending service for low-income families (that accepts donations), though I do not have any personal experience with them.

Teeny Greenies also lends cloth diapers, but to any family interested in cloth, not just low-income families! Again, I don’t have personal experience with them, just passing along what I know.

I also recently discovered Spreading The Fluffy Love and Cloth Diaper Utah!

I’ve also sent diapers to a mama in need that I “met” on a Twitter party. You could also consider posting them on Freecycle, though I know from experience that listing anything on Freecycle can sometimes turn out to be a hassle!

Another option is to offer them up “free for shipping” on any number of cloth diaper groups, forums or boards.

One thing to remember is that if you are giving the diapers away, you have to be satisfied that you gave them with the best intentions, and don’t be upset or surprised if you end up seeing them up for sale, or it turns out that the person you passed them along to didn’t tell you the whole truth. You can certainly ask that they pass them along to someone else when they’re finished with them, but naturally you can’t control what they ultimately do.

I think that unless you were asked not to re-sell them, you could certainly do so. Though, I understand where you’re coming from if you’re not comfortable with that. I wouldn’t feel right selling a giveaway win or review item (though I think bloggers who do so are well within their rights, since the item was “payment” to them!)

How about everyone else? Have you donated diapers?

Sif says:

I am expecting and have decided to cloth diaper my baby. I have heard much about the problems that can develop with microfiber such as repelling and smell, and I was wondering if I should just be overly cautious and not buy any microfiber to avoid this altogether. I do not have hard water where I live and so hopefully if I do invest in some microfiber I won’t have too many problems with it?

Someone asks:

Maria,
What is up with all the newborn cloth diaper reviews? You don’t even have a newborn. Have you gone totally off the deep end?

Signed,
Fake, made up reader.

I’ve already posted several newborn cloth diaper reviews and I have about 6 more coming up in the next month. I realize that I look like I’ve completely lost my marbles and that I’m in dire need of a cloth diaper intervention.

Newborn Diapers

Well, I know you guys are pretty sharp, so you may have already figured out that we are expecting another baby. Our newest cloth diaper model is about half baked, and due in December.

Um, so that’s my news. If there are any pregnancy or newborn related products you’ve been dying to see reviewed or given away, let me know! 😀

Sarah says:

I am puzzled at what this is and why I started getting them. Little black dots in some of the diapers. Not like a stain, but just little black dots. What is this and how can I get rid of it?! It just started in the past month or so. My diapers are in such good condition besides this. I would send a picture but I am not sure how using this form. Thanks!

Sarah

Hi Sarah. It’s hard to say without seeing them, but the first thing that comes to mind is mildew.

Is it all of your diapers or just some? Is it on the inserts and diapers, or just the inserts? How often are you washing? What is your wash routine? How are you drying the diapers?

I’d suggest washing no more than every 2-3 days, consider keeping your pail or wet bag open, use hot water to wash (I’m sure you already do!) and make sure the diapers get dry fairly quickly. Hang (or lay) them in the sun if you can. If you have a bathroom that won’t get steamy while you’re drying the diapers, consider hanging them in there so you can turn the exhaust fan on to remove humidity from the air.

Has anyone else experienced back dots on their diapers? What was it? How did you get rid of it?

Laurie says:

Maria,

I have recently started using fitteds with covers as the overnight diapering solution for my one year old daughter. I bought two Mother-Ease one size fitteds with an air-flow cover and they work great. I also bought a Kissaluvs size 2 fitted which I love. However, I didn’t buy a Marvels diaper cover–I assumed the Mother-Ease cover would work over the Kissaluv fitted. It really doesn’t. Neither does an unstuffed Bum Genius or Econobum cover. The Kissaluv fitted is awesome for absorbancy and softness, so I don’t want to give up on it. Any thoughts on what cover (or unstuffed pocket) has the widest dimensions to cover any potential fitteds I might use?

It seems like the trend in cloth diaper covers is to make them trim, for use as an all-in-two system with inserts or trifolded prefolds (like the Econobum.) However, this means they don’t really work well over fluffier fitted diapers.

The most generously sized PUL cover I’ve used is definitely the Smartipants Smart-Fit Cover. I was able to fit it over my fluffiest fitted diaper with ease (see the last three pictures in that review!) The Thirsties Duo Wraps and Thirsties Covers as well as the Bummis Super Whisper Wrap seem to have a more generous cut to fit over fitted diapers.

For night time, I highly recommend a wool cover. They are breathable, have some stretch and give to them, and fit very well over fitted diapers!

I know there are fitted mamas out there, what is your favorite cover to use over a fitted diaper?
