Doodle Dypes AI2 Review

>

doodle
I received my Doodle Dypes all-in-two diaper a few weeks ago, and it earned it’s spot in my pile of favorites right away!
doodle dypes
Sandy of Doodle Dypes makes many of her diapers custom to order.  Mine has a cotton knit outer, hidden procare waterproof barrier and an organic bamboo fleece inner.
doodle dypes
I love this print!  I think the blue makes it suit my son, but the purple hearts would work for a girl too.
snaps
This is an AI2 with a snap-in soaker.
snap overlap
You can overlap the wings to fit a slimmer baby.
diaper
This definitely looks like a professionally sewn diaper, with even stitching and evenly applied snaps.
fold down rise
It is a “one size” by way of a fold down rise.  One thing that’s unique is that the second row of snaps are hidden (applied under the inner layer) so when you’re using this on a smaller baby, no snaps will touch his/her tummy.
organic bamboo fleece
The all-in-two’s snap in soaker can give you 5-15 layers of organic bamboo fleece absorbency, depending on how you fold it.
soaker
Organic Bamboo Fleece needs to be prepped (washed on hot & dried on medium heat 3-4 times) and will gain maximum absorbency after about 10 washes.  Sandy pre-washes all of her fabrics before sewing, so you don’t have to worry about any uneven shrinking.
diaper

Above is how you use the fold-down rise.

diaper
I’m able to get a good fit with or without folding down the rise.  The fit looks a little strange in that picture for some reason, but it’s not!
diaper
It fits wonderfully around the legs too.
diaper
I was anxious to get the diaper on him, so I only washed it once.
reusable diaper
The absorbency is fantastic.
cloth diaper
Our Doodle Dype is in our regular rotation.  In fact, my son is wearing it and sitting on my lap right now!
diaper
We have even used it on car rides with no leaking, and it doesn’t have the wicking (at the legs) issues that some diapers with a cotton outer & hidden PUL have!  I do know that the cotton outer will fade and wear over time.  That’s just the nature of a cotton knit fabric.
A Doodle Dypes all-in-two will need to be changed at each diaper change, it isn’t the hybrid type where you can just change out a soaker.  Each one retails for $20 and you can shop Doodle Dypes on HyenaCart and visit Doodle Dypes on Facebook!
The diaper was provided to me free of charge for the purpose of this review.  I was not requested or required to write a positive review, and all opinions are my own.  I was not otherwise compensated for my review.

Kim’s Kloth Pocket Diaper Tester Review

>

When Kim of Kim’s Crafts decided to start selling Kim’s Kloth Diapers, she needed testers.  Usually a WAHM will want the feedback of moms with different age and size babies before selling outside of her circle of friends.
I like to think I’m a good tester because I’m pretty good at evaluating products in a detailed fashion, and heaven knows I don’t hold back, hee hee.
I tested a one size pocket diaper, which is right up my alley.  I really enjoyed testing for Kim because she seemed to really listen to my feedback, and I didn’t have to worry about her taking my comments about the diaper as personal criticism!  As you read my review, please keep in mind that I tested a prototype, and Kim took all of her tester’s feedback into account while tweaking her final product.
Kim is having the Kim’s Kloth Store grand opening on Thursday, August 5th at noon, and you can get 10% off everything all week!
The diaper has a nice pocket opening, though it wasn’t quite as big as a Bumgenius.
The snaps include the ability to overlap for small babies.
I thought the stitching was very even, I had to scrutinize to find an area that was a tiny bit off, and looking at this picture, even up close, it’s hardly noticeable.

Initially, I misunderstood and thought this was a sized diaper, and put it on my son as shipped (large setting.)

The package included clear instructions on how to adjust the leg elastic, so I think I was just having a major brain lapse that day.

It was a little loose on the large setting of course, since my son normally wears mediums.

Stuffed with the included microfiber towel, it was very trim.  I’m not a huge fan of the microfiber towel for various reasons!

The next time I used the diaper, I adjusted the leg elastic.  It’s easily accessible through the pocket.

The snaps are pretty “sticky” so you don’t have to worry about them coming loose during use.

It took a firm tug to get each snap out of the opening, but it wasn’t difficult at all.  There are a total of four settings.

I had an extra BumGenius microfiber insert, so I decided to try it in the Kim’s Kloth.

The insert is a little wider than the diaper.

So I wasn’t able to get it to lay quite flat.  I think a narrower insert would work well.  If I remember correctly, the Fuzzibunz insert would probably be a great fit!

Above is the small setting, folded.

There’s the small setting, stretched.
Above, the large setting folded.  I think, I think!  It’s been a while since I took these photos!
Stretched
In the end, I settled on the next-to-smallest size.
Kim estimates the weight range to be 15-40 pounds.  My son was around 17.5 lbs and had plenty of room to grow in them.  I’d love to see this in a slightly smaller pattern as well, for newborn-15 pounds, like the stages/duo diapers that other brands have.

I noticed that the inner of the diaper got a bit pilly after several washings, and we did have a bit of wicking at the legs.  However, I think that was probably due to my lack of microfiber folding skills!  I’d love to try it with an insert sewn specifically to fit it.

The diapers will sell for $13 (bargain!) with a microfiber towel inluded for stuffing.  You can elect to purchase a sewn insert for $1 extra.  Kim also made some tweaks to the snap arrangement on the final product!

“Like” the Kim’s Crafts Facebook page to see fan submitted photos of the diaper on other babies, and keep tabs on the grand opening!
I received a diaper for the purposes of testing, opinions are mine and I wasn’t required to write a review at all, let alone a positive one.  🙂

Bumgenius 4.0 Review, Comparison to 3.0

bumgenius 4.0

I don’t usually post giveaways on the weekends, since the internet is closed on weekends and all.  <—-According to my Aunt Becky.  <—-Not my real Aunt.  I’m going to be a daredevil and do it anyway!

I forewarn you that this post has a lot of yapping and a lot of pictures.

Before I get started – I’m quite happy about the improved Velcro, but we’ll have to see how it pans out in the long run.  I was a little disappointed with all the hype about the “new” product. It had me panicking that my favorite diapers were being discontinued. I’m glad that it was just a 4.0 but mad at myself for getting caught up in all the speculation.

So here’s what was new:

  1. Slightly larger to fit bigger babies.
  2. Improved Velcro and laundry tabs.
  3. Snap closure option.
  4. More easily replaceable elastic.
  5. 3 extremely pale pastels.  Noodle (yellow), sweet (green) and bubble (lavender.)
I bought myself a 4.0 in Velcro in the “sweet” color.  A winner gets the same, plus a snap closure 4.0 in the “noodle” color.  I didn’t buy myself a snap closure diaper, so there’s no detailed review of it.  However, as you can see above, it looks nearly identical to the Flip.
I suspected that the sizing would be very similar to the flip, and it appears I was right.
As you can see in the above pictures, the colors (can’t speak about “bubble” since I didn’t buy one) are extremely light.  They almost look like an item made of two different fabrics that start out the same color, but wear differently over time.  Then after a while, they are slightly off.
As you can see here, the contrast to something white (white paper, the white Velcro, white inner etc.) is what makes the diaper not look totally white.
The story is that many parents were asking for lighter colors that wouldn’t show through newborn clothing. I remember being annoyed by the characters on disposable diapers showing through pale baby clothing.
I find the color names to be a bit confusing, but that’s true for all brands.  I already had a hard time remembering which blue and green were which. I definitely agree that descriptive color names like chocolate, root beer, platinum, cherry, raspberry, watermelon and the like, are more appealing.  However, it’s also very easy to imagine what color you’re getting based on the name.  In fact, I would expect that root beer and chocolate may be slightly different colors!  Noodle?  Sweet?  Bubble?  What the heck!  I had to check 3 times before I ordered to try to make sure I knew what I was getting.  That was especially difficult since the website was barely working and most of the images weren’t appearing thanks to all the traffic.
OK now I have to apologize in advance for using a 9 month old diaper in my comparison shots, it’s kinda gross.  But, it also lets you see what a Bumgenius 3.0 looks like after 9 months!  Plus, if I had bought a new one just for this comparison, the winner wouldn’t be getting two diapers.
I had a very tough time photographing the change to the elastic.  it’s very hard to see in the photo, but in the 3.0, there is a horizontal line of stitching at the end of the elastic.
Can you see it?  Yeah, me neither.  But it’s there.  I just can’t get a good photo of it.
The 4.0 doesn’t have that additional stitching, which should make elastic replacement easier.
This was the improvement I was happiest about.  The biggest problems I have with the BG are the stinky microfiber, (easily remedied with an occasional dab of bleach with the inserts only-sorry to the bleach haters, but it works) the &^%^* laundry tabs and resulting curling closure tabs, and all the snagging that ends up on the front of the diapers.
A lot of people end up doing a snap conversion when the tabs bite the dust, especially since their little ones are discovering the joy of rrriippppp-ing the Velcro around that time anyway.  You can also buy refresher kits from Cottonbabies and replace them, but I’m no seamstress.  We prefer Velcro at our house because it’s easy and very adjustable.  We just can’t go pants-less with them anymore!
The closures didn’t stick to the old laundry tabs very well.  The new laundry tabs actually have the Velcro loop for the tabs to stick on to.  They are quite soft, so I really don’t think they would irritate baby’s skin.
Hanging the shells to dry seems to do a lot to preserve the life of both the closures and the elastic.  However, if the tabs don’t stick well, they will still snag other diapers in the washer.
So what about the sizing change?  I think the changes are subtle.  I’m sure there will be a few people that will have problems with the new sizing, but I may not have noticed without a comparison.  The overall length/rise of the diaper is slightly larger, but it seems the front/wings of the diaper saw the biggest change.  I do think the fit seems to be very close to the Flip.
I wondered what the size change would mean for the small setting, since a 4th/newborn rise snap wasn’t added.  The changes seem slight enough that I don’t think they will make much difference for most people.  We started out at about 14 pounds on the medium setting, and I’ve heard people say they don’t start to fit well until around 10 pounds.  So, most people will need to have some newborn diapers anyway.  *shrug*  edit: It took me a while to notice, but the rise snap was moved down slightly on the 4.0, I suppose to make up for the larger size.
Next I compared each size setting on the 3.0 vs 4.0.  This of course isn’t an exact science, but I measured each diaper folded, then stretched.  This is a little subjective since depending on just how you flatten/stretch it, measurements can vary a bit.  But, it should give you an idea!
3.0, small setting, folded.
4.0, small setting, folded.
3.0, small setting, stretched.
4.0, small setting, stretched.
4.0 small vs. 3.0 small.
3.0, medium, folded.
4.0, medium, folded.
3.0, medium, stretched.
4.0, medium, stretched.
4.0 medium vs. 3.0 medium.
3.0 large, folded.
4.0, large, folded.
3.0, large, stretched.
4.0, large, stretched.
4.0 large vs. 3.0 large.
I’m a big fan of Bumgenius pocket diapers.  They are always the first hubby or I reach for.  They fit well, they are super easy to use and they simply don’t leak.  They have their faults like any other diaper, but nothing that would keep me from using them.
I could have done without the email saying with “heavy hearts” that they are “discontinuing” their “highly acclaimed” diapers.  While that technically was true, (3.0s were discontinued in favor of the 4.0s) it was misleading.  Cottonbabies didn’t reassure people (like me) that the diapers they loved would still be around, reinforcing the fear that the new product was a big change.
4.0, medium setting, ~17.5 lbs
3.0, medium setting, taken the same day as the above
The only appreciable difference to me right now (since only time will tell if the new Velcro is any better) is a slight funky-ness to the elastic placement.  I guess it’s from the wider wings?  I noticed it as I was photographing the diapers, but thought it might just be the way it was sitting.  If you look at the 4.0, the elastic stops much further down on his leg.  I may just need to get used to pulling the new, wider wings more firmly or something, I dunno.  edit: I think the difference might be due to the rise snap being moved down slightly.
Flip, medium setting, taken the same day as the other 2 photos.
This diaper is not white!
Wait for it…
Riiiiippp…
Leaves little to the imagination, LOL

See the 4.0 on my newborn.

Oh Katy (Formerly Katydid Cloth) One Size Pocket Diaper Review

katydid

Before I begin, I have to thank my lovely reader, Jill, for introducing me to Katydid Cloth Diapers!  I contacted the company after Jill mentioned Katydid as a diaper she’d love to see me review/give away.

Katie responded to me right away, and my review diaper came in the mail in just a few days!

Katydid Cloth had all the makings of a favorite diaper for me right off the bat.

Their diapers are one size pocket diapers with a snap down rise and snap closures, and they include a microfiber insert and doubler.

Right now, the diapers are available in berry, sage, melon and twilight, but more colors are coming!  I love the twilight color!

There are a couple of things that make Katydid special.  One is the front pocket opening.  With this, you don’t have to reach through an icky mess to pull out the insert.

The snap overlap allows you to easily roll the diaper up and take it with you, if you find yourself with a dirty diaper and no wet bag.  This actually just happened to me last week!  Katydid calls this the “wrap & snap” feature.

The microfleece inner is so soft.  Oh my.  None of my other diapers are this soft.  I would think it would lose some of the softness with repeated washings, but I do not recall any of my diapers being this soft when new.  I want a pillow (or some undies, hee hee!) made out of this!!

The diaper has a simple snapping setup, but it also has an additional “newborn side snap.”  There are other diapers out there that have a “hip snap” to prevent wing droop, but I find them far more confusing.  This diaper has two side snap options on each side of the front of the diaper.  The male/female snaps are the reverse of the wing snaps, so it’s not confusing as to what’s supposed to snap where.  (Although what I just wrote sounds confusing!)

If your baby is small enough to need these, simply snap them first.

Then, finish snapping the wings.  The “hip snap” is female, not male, so it shouldn’t dig into your baby’s skin when s/he is big enough not to have it snapped anymore.

For those that aren’t familiar with “wing droop” on newborns, I’ve asked my lovely assistant, Manny Bear, to demonstrate.  Manny’s day job is bear lumberjack, so I’ve cut his head out of the pictures, to protect his privacy. He said he was afraid the other stuffed animals would make fun of him if they found out he was moonlighting as a diaper model.

As you can see, on a tiny baby (or bear), the diaper snaps very close to the middle, and the wings are left flapping in the breeze.

If I use the newborn side snaps, I get a great fit, with no wing droop.

If I can get a good fit on fuzzy bear legs, I’m pretty sure I could get a good fit on newborn chicken legs too!  I mean that figuratively of course.  I’m not going to try to diaper a chicken.

So how does it measure up?  It sure does get teeny tiny.  The medium setting seems just about the same as the medium setting of a Bumgenius 3.0.

I noticed that the rise snap layout looked ever so slightly different.

They have the same adjustable size microfiber insert, along with a newborn insert/doubler.  I greatly prefer this snap down insert adjustment, since it saves a step and takes the guesswork out of diaper stuffing!

Overall, the Katydid insert is just a smidge smaller.

It also has two snaps to adjust the size of the insert, which allows it to lay flatter.

Finally, I measured the diaper on the small, medium and large settings, both folded in half, and fully stretched.  For comparison, I measured a Bumgenius 3.0 on small & large settings in this post.

Small:
Stretched:

Medium::
Stretched:

Large:

Stretched:

It seems to be a bit smaller than the Bumgenius, and the small setting seems much more likely to fit a tiny baby.  The Katydid Cloth diaper is estimated to fit babies 8-35 lbs, but that of course can vary greatly based on your baby’s shape!

My son is rather petite at 17.5 lbs and 28.5″ or so at 13 months.

He fit in the medium setting, with plenty of room to grow.

The back of the diaper doesn’t sit quite right.  I wonder if it’s because I used the side snaps.  Looking at this picture, it seems that’s what caused it.

I really don’t need the side snap at my son’s size, but it didn’t affect the diaper.  We still used it as our first in the morning diaper, with no leaks!

At $17.95 each, Katydid Cloth diapers are priced wonderfully for a one-size diaper. Editor’s note: Katydid Cloth has been renamed Oh Katy.See this diaper on my newborn.

Want one?  Shop for them or win one!  Katydid is sending one blog reader a one-size pocket diaper in his/her choice of color!
