Diapering Today DVD Review & Giveaway w/ Sprout Change Cloth Diaper (11/24) US/Canada

Catherine Bolden is the owner of The Willow Store and creator of Willow Pads reusable feminine products, Willow Sprouts accessories, Everyday Willow natural living & natural laundry products and of course, the Sprout Change cloth diapering system!

In March, I posted my Sprout Change Cloth Diaper Review. If you missed that, I strongly suggest you check it out! My review includes detailed photos of the one-size AI2 insert/reusable and reversible shell system, detailing how the size adjusts, how the reversible shell works, and I also have measurements of each size! The winner of this giveaway not only receives their own copy of the DVD set I’m reviewing today, but also a Sprout Change shell & insert!

diapering today dvd 2 literature diapering today dvd 3 inside

Catherine’s latest project is the Diapering Today DVD set. The set is a comprehensive “how-to” with everything you want to know about cloth diapering, from the “why” to the “how.” Some people are fortunate enough to have cloth diaper stores near by that offer cloth 101 classes, or have cloth diaper groups near them. Some of us don’t! I know when I wanted to start cloth diapering, I spent a ton of time trying to gather the information from all over the place online, and make sense of it all.

The Willow Store is selling the Diapering Today DVD set for $17.95, and 1% of the profits will be donated to providing cloth and education to low-income families. When you buy the DVD bundled with an Organic Super Saver Starter Kit (1 shell & 3 organic inserts), it costs you just $11.20 more than buying the starter kit alone. I think that would make an awesome gift for an expectant Mama, but I do wish they had an option to purchase the DVD by itself perhaps with a coupon for $10 off your first Willow Store order to offset the cost.

diapering today dvd 6 back

The set consists of two DVDs. I watched this on my laptop, so I don’t have an exact running time, but the DVDs are each about an hour long. The really nice thing is that they are broken up into bite sized chapters. You can watch it all, a little at a time, or only watch what interests you. Pertinent information is repeated (such as in types of cloth diapers, and the terminology section) so you won’t miss anything if you don’t watch the whole thing. That said, it was not monotonous and didn’t seem repetitive!

Throughout the DVD, you will hear genuiune, unscripted responses from actual cloth diapering parents on various subjects. This is broken up by photo and video demonstrations, information from Catherine herself, and awesome cloth diaper facts from the RDIA’s Heather McNamara.

I watched the trailer (below) before receiving the DVD for review, and I saw some familiar faces!! Do you see anyone you know?

I saw Calley of The Eco Chic, and I saw Baby Makin’ Machine’s daughter, Lil’ J! By the time I finished watching both DVDs, I felt like I knew every Mom in the film. I’m not sure if some of them genuinely looked familiar, or if it was just because I’d heard them chat about cloth diapers for 2 hours, LOL!

So here’s what you’ll find on the DVDs and approximately how long each section is:

Disc 1:

  • Intro (2 min)
  • Why Cloth (15 min)
  • How to Use (3 min)
  • Types (13 min)
  • Getting Started (10 min)
  • Washing (10 min)
  • Cloth on a Budget (4 min)
  • Community (4 min)
    Disc 2:

  • Tips & Tricks (15 min)
  • Accessories (5 min)
  • Resources (3 min)
  • Potty Training (10 min)
  • Evolution of Diapers (18 min)
  • Terms (13 min)
  • Credits (1.5 min)
  • Trailer (2 min)

I’m not going to go into great detail as far as what you’ll find in each chapter; I think you can gather that from their titles! This isn’t a big budget, Hollywood produced film with fancy effects and actors with scripts. It feels to me like what you’d find out if you went to a few cloth 101 type classes, a few meetings at a cloth diaper group, and chatted with a lot of moms who used cloth diapers.

There are a lot of things that I love about the DVDs. First, it’s not an ad for Sprout Change. I believe the Sprout Change diaper was pictured as one all-in-two option, and was also pictured on a baby. The DVD gave very unbiased information on all types and brands of cloth diapers. I love that all of the types of diapers were demonstrated on a baby doll, so a potential cloth diaper user could see how easy it really is.

Although I felt the DVD series was quite long (about 2 hours total) it is absolutely not necessary to watch the whole thing. If someone already knows they want to cloth diaper, but they don’t know what to buy and are afraid of washing, they can just watch the types, terms and washing sections.

I also love that it gives a lot of information, without getting so detailed that your head would spin. For example, they showed an “all-in-one” style diaper, but didn’t go on to say that they can have a sewn in soaker, a flap soaker, a snap in soaker, a tongue soaker etc. etc. Just tell ’em what they need to know!

I felt like this DVD covered everything I’d want to tell a friend who was interested in cloth, and it was done in a very similar way. All of the parents were genuine, loved cloth diapers, but at no point were “holier than thou” about diapers. Several stated that it doesn’t have to be all or nothing, that you could do part cloth/part disposables, build your stash slowly, or just buy or borrow a couple to see what you think!

The DVD also seemed to advocate the K.I.S.S. (keep it simple, sweetie!) method of washing. They recommended the simple wash routine that I found works for us (and so many others) and did mention that you don’t want a detergent with fabric softeners, whiteners, brighteners etc. However, they didn’t whip out the “detergent police” badges and say that you had to stick to a certain list of pricey detergents. Basically, choose the detergent with the simplest ingredients.

They also didn’t try to make cloth all sunshine & roses. They addressed the fact that sometimes people do have smell issues with cloth, that such a problem isn’t normal, but that the resolution is usually quite simple!

I also loved that they addressed the “what about the poop” issues in the same way I do. I swear I touch less poop (and do less poopy laundry!) now, since what’s supposed to stay in the diaper, stays in the diaper! With disposables, I was changing entire outfits (including socks, and sometimes my own clothing!!) instead of just a diaper.

I am going to lend my DVD to a friend who wants to cloth diaper the twins she’s expecting. Until now I’ve totally overwhelmed her with huge chunks of information. This will be awesome for her to sit down with her hubby and watch a little at a time!

Thirsties Duo Fab Fitted Cloth Diaper & Duo Wrap Giveaway (CLOSED 11/2) US/Canada

Duo Fab FittedDuo Wrap

This is the last of the fabulous Thirsties giveaways in the Virtual Baby Shower Event! In the interest of brevity, I won’t go into too many details about the diaper & cover, but please check out my Thirsties Duo Wrap review, my post comparing the Thirsties Duo Wrap vs Sized Diaper Cover, and my Thirsties Duo Fab Fitted Review & Comparison to the sized Fab Fitted! Each of those posts has tons of detailed photos, measurements, and all the info!

duo wrap over fitted

The Thirsties Duo Fab Fitted is the improved version of the much loved fab fitted diaper. It comes in six colors and your choice of aplix or snap closures. Like the duo diaper and duo wrap, each size has three snap down rise settings to fit from birth to potty training in just two sizes. Size 1 fits 6-18 lbs and size 2 fits 18-40 lbs! The duo fab fitted is also improved in that it has a “tunnel” style soaker that allows you to add additional absorbency underneath, and also makes for more thorough washing & faster drying than a fully sewn in soaker! Each Duo Fab Fitted diaper retails for $17.00.

Naturally, the Duo Fab Fitted goes hand in hand with the Duo Wrap! The wrap has the same duo sizing, comes in 9 colors, 5 fantastic prints, and snap or aplix closures! The PUL cover has double gussets to contain messes (just like the duo diaper) and you can wipe and reuse it. The wraps are free of VOC’s, PVC, phthalates, lead, and latex! Each duo wrap retails for $12.75 for solid colors, or $13.75 for prints.

Cloth Diapers Diaper Covers Giveaway Made in the USA Newborn Diapers Prefolds PUL Sized Diapers Snap Closure Two Size/Staged Diapers Velcro/Aplix Closure Virtual Baby Shower Event

Thirsties Duo Wrap & Duo Hemp Prefold Giveaway (CLOSED 10/20) US/Canada

thirsties duo wrap

Earlier this year, I did a photo review of a Thirsties Duo Wrap and Prefold. (Check out that post for all the details and photos!) I had won a cover & sized fitted in a giveaway, and chose the newborn sizes, even though I wasn’t expecting at that point! You may call it crazy, I call it planning ahead! Anyway, I wanted to compare the XS cover to the duo wrap, and I had a gift certificate, so I went for it!

Since my newborn isn’t here yet, I haven’t actually gotten to use this, but I have yet to meet a Thirsties product I don’t like!

The Thirsties Duo Wrap is essentially the same design as the duo diaper, only it’s a cover!

duo_wraps

The duo wrap has a trimmer fit than the sized covers, so it’s perfect to use over prefolds or trim diapers. It comes in size 1 (6-18 pounds) and size 2 (18-40 pounds) to get you from birth to potty training with just 2 sizes!

duo_wrap_closures

The wraps come in 9 colors ($12.75 each) and 5 prints ($13.75 each.) They’re available with snaps as well as Velcro closures!

prefold

They pair perfectly with the duo hemp prefold, which also comes in size 1 and 2. The prefolds are super soft (and I mean soft) cotton hemp jersey, which is more durable and more absorbent than 100% cotton, and is naturally anti-microbial. They are sewn so that each portion is only 2 layers thick, so they are easier to get clean and dry (view my review for all the pics!) Each prefold retails for $7.00.

Be sure to request a Thirsties print catalog, “like” Thirsties on Facebook and follow Thirsties on Twitter!

Cloth Diaper Advice – Mailbox Mondays 7/11/11 – Black Spots on Diapers & Cover for Fitteds

black spots on #clothdiapers via @chgdiapers

Do you have cloth diaper issues? On Mondays, I answer reader submitted questions, and ask my readers to weigh in as well.

Questions don’t have to be cloth diaper related, just email maria at change-diapers.com with “Mailbox Mondays” in the subject, or fill out my contact form for readers, which you will always be able to find on my Contact Page.

Sarah says:

I am puzzled at what this is and why I started getting them. Little black dots in some of the diapers. Not like a stain, but just little black dots. What is this and how can I get rid of it?! It just started in the past month or so. My diapers are in such good condition besides this. I would send a picture but I am not sure how using this form. Thanks!

Sarah

Hi Sarah. It’s hard to say without seeing them, but the first thing that comes to mind is mildew.

Is it all of your diapers or just some? Is it on the inserts and diapers, or just the inserts? How often are you washing? What is your wash routine? How are you drying the diapers?

I’d suggest washing no more than every 2-3 days, consider keeping your pail or wet bag open, use hot water to wash (I’m sure you already do!) and make sure the diapers get dry fairly quickly. Hang (or lay) them in the sun if you can. If you have a bathroom that won’t get steamy while you’re drying the diapers, consider hanging them in there so you can turn the exhaust fan on to remove humidity from the air.

Has anyone else experienced back dots on their diapers? What was it? How did you get rid of it?

Laurie says:

Maria,

I have recently started using fitteds with covers as the overnight diapering solution for my one year old daughter. I bought two Mother-Ease one size fitteds with an air-flow cover and they work great. I also bought a Kissaluvs size 2 fitted which I love. However, I didn’t buy a Marvels diaper cover–I assumed the Mother-Ease cover would work over the Kissaluv fitted. It really doesn’t. Neither does an unstuffed Bum Genius or Econobum cover. The Kissaluv fitted is awesome for absorbancy and softness, so I don’t want to give up on it. Any thoughts on what cover (or unstuffed pocket) has the widest dimensions to cover any potential fitteds I might use?

It seems like the trend in cloth diaper covers is to make them trim, for use as an all-in-two system with inserts or trifolded prefolds (like the Econobum.) However, this means they don’t really work well over fluffier fitted diapers.

The most generously sized PUL cover I’ve used is definitely the Smartipants Smart-Fit Cover. I was able to fit it over my fluffiest fitted diaper with ease (see the last three pictures in that review!) The Thirsties Duo Wraps and Thirsties Covers as well as the Bummis Super Whisper Wrap seem to have a more generous cut to fit over fitted diapers.

For night time, I highly recommend a wool cover. They are breathable, have some stretch and give to them, and fit very well over fitted diapers!

I know there are fitted mamas out there, what is your favorite cover to use over a fitted diaper?

Cloth Diapers Diaper Covers Giveaway Prefolds PUL Review Sized Diapers Velcro/Aplix Closure Warranties

Real Nappies Cloth Diapers & Covers/Wraps Review & Giveaway (CLOSED 5/26)

real nappies 1

Real Nappies makes quality cloth diapers and covers, swim diapers, training pants and accessories at affordable prices.

real nappies 2 top up pack

I received the Real Nappies “Top up Pack” to review. The top up pack retails for $39 and contains 6 cloth diapers (100% Indian cotton prefolds, 6 diapers retail for $19.99-$29.99 separately, depending on size) and 2 snug wraps. The wraps in the packages are available in white only, but sold separately for $12 each, you can get them in red, blue or pink!

real nappies 3 6 prefolds

The diapers and covers come in 4 sizes. Newborn (6-13 lb), Infant (11-20 lb), Crawler (17-30 lb) and Toddler (29-40+ lb.) Even though my son is almost two, I chose the crawler size based on weight.

real nappies 4 before preppingreal nappies 5 after prepping

As I expected, the prefolds shrunk a good bit in length after washing & drying (before on left, after on right.)

real nappies 5 before prepping

They did not shrink noticeably in width.

Cloth diapers (no matter what kind) look so pretty stacked up after washing!

real nappies 7 snug wrap cover crawler

The snug wraps are high quality PUL, and you can reuse them for several diaper changes.

real nappies 8 laundry tabs

They do have laundry tabs for the Velcro closures, but I do wish they were a little bit bigger!

real nappies 9 rear elasticreal nappies 10 leg elastic

The covers have gentle (but effective) elastic at the rear and legs.

Here is the crawler size measured both folded and stretched. The elastic isn’t super tight, so it doesn’t have tons of stretch.

There is a flap of PUL at the front of the diaper:

real nappies 13 flap covering aplix

Though it seems to be calling out to have the prefold tucked under it, don’t do it! The flap is there to prevent any wicking through where the Velcro strip is sewn on.

real nappies 14 fold prefoldreal nappies 15 place in cover

To use the system, simply fold the prefold and place it in the cover. The guide included with the pack includes tips on how to best fold for boys, girls etc. I was thinking it was going to look really bulky the way I folded it, but it didn’t!

Here’s the crawler size on my 22ish pound almost 2-year old:

real nappies 16 crawler size on 22 lb babyreal nappies 18 crawler cover side

I think it fit him quite well, and the prefold was very absorbent! (They also sell boosters to make them work better at night!)
real nappies 19 crawler cover frontreal nappies 20 crawler cover rear

Real Nappies has tons of packages available, from a $15 intro pack (1 cover & 1 prefold) to a $499 birth to potty pack. For $69, you can get 12 diapers, 3 covers and 100 liners in the Essentials Pack. That would get you in cloth full time (though you would be washing a lot!) for about the same cost as a month of disposables!

Definitely note that even though these are affordable, Real Nappies has a Two-Child Guarantee. They guarantee that you’ll be able to use Real Nappies Cloth Diapers and Snug Wraps for at least two children, and will repair or replace a diaper or cover that fails before your second child outgrows it! Now of course, there are caveats (click the link to read all the details) and in order for the guarantee to apply, you have to wash them no more often than every two days, using at least the minimum recommended # of diapers. So, you can’t wash them 2 times a day (like I did with my first 6 diapers) and have them replaced.

Giveaway: Real Nappies is offering one reader an intro pack in his/her choice of size (ARV $15.00.)

Here’s how to enter: All entries go in the form below. I love comments (great way to remind yourself you entered) but comments do not count as entries.

Mandatory entries include your name, email address and what size Real Nappies you would need. You may receive a bonus entry if you “like” The Real Nappies USA page . They are giving away a $150 prize pack when they reach 1,000 fans!

I will accept entries until Thursday, May 26th, 2011 at 9:00 P.M. Eastern. I will select a winner using random.org’s true random number generator and notify him/her by email.
