Well, we almost didn’t have a Mailbox Mondays this week! Here I am, just dying to answer your questions, and I didn’t get a single submission. For shame! 😉

Catherine came to the rescue and asked:

I was wondering- after my babe outgrows her dipes, is there something I should do before I store them so they don’t get stinky?

Sif says:

I am expecting and have decided to cloth diaper my baby. I have heard much about the problems that can develop with microfiber such as repelling and smell, and I was wondering if I should just be overly cautious and not buy any microfiber to avoid this altogether. I do not have hard water where I live and so hopefully if I do invest in some microfiber I won’t have too many problems with it?

Cloth Diaper Advice – Mailbox Mondays 5/16/11 – Washing Diapers with Other Laundry

Sometimes even experienced cloth diaperers have cloth diaper questions. Mailbox Mondays are where I take user-submitted questions, answer them, and ask my readers to weigh in too!

Hannah says:

Hi Maria,

I have a question that maybe you could weigh in on, or your readers!

My 22 month old son has been doing great on the potty, woo-hoo! My diaper pail is getting 3-8 wet/dirty diapers or training pants every 3 days. I don’t like letting things sit longer than that, and it doesn’t seem worth doing a load of laundry for just that many. Is it OK to put them through a rinse cycle or two and then wash them with other items like his clothing, or towels or sheets? Is there anything I shouldn’t wash them with? Any other options people have done, like hand washing?

Thank you!

Hannah VW

Jen says:

I’ve read many posts and comments about moms battling the stinkies (ammonia smell) but I’m not sure what that smells like. Will I know it if it happens?

I do notice that my baby’s diaper will smell like urine in the morning (after a 12-hr night) but I don’t smell it during the day. Is that normal from the overnight wearing or is that the dreaded stinkies?

Cloth Diapering Cloth Diapers Guest Posting How To/Demo Washing

Cloth Diapering Without a Washing Machine – Guest Post By Alyssa

All that’s missing from Alyssa’s life is a washer and dryer. She has access to coin operated machines within her building (certainly better than schlepping them to a laundromat!) but anyone who has paid for laundry knows how expensive it can get. So, she washed her diapers by hand every day, for several months. She agreed to allow me to post this so everyone can see that it can be done! -Maria

My name is Alyssa and I love cloth diapers. Like, really love. So much so that I went against everyone’s “advice” and decided to CD my daughter while living in an apartment with no washer/dryer. Our diaper laundry costs were pretty much the cost of what disposables would have been (I’m a bargain shopper.) But the money wasn’t the point. I wanted my daughter to have what I had. Nice, comfortable, and breathable cloth next to her tush =)
